Well, we all figured 104.1 would go Hip Hop, but why didn't Emmis just flip 104.1 itself instead of selling it? Anyone have any logical explination?
______________

I was thinking about that myself, I would've like to see Emmis do Hip-Hop on 104.1 than Radio One.

I thought Radio One already had a hip-hop station in St. Louis.

Unless it's a poor signal, 104.1 will probably be Urban AC.

And Radio One is probably hoping to get a third St. Louis-area station (preferably on FM) on which to program Black Gospel.

That's Radio One's "Modus Operendi": They try to get three FM stations in a market, program one as Hip-Hop/Urban Contemporary, the second as Urban AC, and the third as Black Gospel. If they have two FM's and one AM in a market, the Black Gospel format is on AM.

Radio One blew up their Hip Hop Q95.5 last December in favor of Urban AC "Foxy 95.5." I kind of doubt that they will do Hip Hop again since they just blew it up last year, I would figure that they will be either CHR, Smooth Jazz, or Black Gospel.

Radio One offered probably double what the frequency is actually worth, so they were smart to take the money and run, IMHO. Nothing that Emmis was ever going to do with 104.1 was ever going to get any ratings or billing.

Re: Hip Hop vs Gospel or any other format

I follow Radio One. It should be Hip Hop. They will not do a Gospel format without completing having an Urban and Urban AC outlet in their market first.

If Radio One were to pick up a 3rd signal, THEN it would turn Gospel. It happened in Philly. It happened in Detroit. It happened in ATL. That's how Radio One is.

Must remember the only reason why they dropped Q95.5 was simply because that was their ONLY stick in the market, and they needed somewhere to put Tom Joyner, since they own half of his show. It's not that they abandoned Hip Hop, it's that they needed to fit Joyner on their only stick.

It's gonna be very exciting to see the new 104.1 in the market. Hopefully this time, Radio One will give their staff the tools to take a better chunk away from The Beat.

Hot 104 is on-the-air now.

Also, remember Q95.5 struggled against the Beat. Everytime it seemed to make inroads, it would fall right back down. It made a lot of sense to dump hip-hop on 95.5 because it's a tough sell, and the ratings were pretty low. Foxy's up, and it's a much more solid competitor to Majic 104.9. If I were Clear Channel, I'd actually be exploring putting Majic on 103.3 or 93.7.

The Beat is a logical target if you have a good stick. It's doing very well and could use the competition.
