St. Patrick's Day programming

Are shameless plugs allowed? With Wednesday being St. Patrick's Day, non-commercial WJMJ (88.9 FM) in Hartford plans to go (partially) green by playing several songs from Ireland an hour. The regular standards and soft AC format isn't being scrapped entirely, simply expanded upon. Just hope I don't come up against any names that I can't pronounce!

The stations I was associated with (I'm retired now) did what you describe in the early 1970's, and Wally Phillips did this on wgn, Chicago, before that.

There is nothing new under the Sun.

I suppose you play Patriotic music on July 4, Monster Mash on Halloween, and Christmas music in December, too.

Best wishes!

I suspect so, in some cases. Yes, we played Christmas music, but we skipped doing Monster Mass. I only posted the prgoramming note because, while there's nothing new under the sun, so much of what passes for radio these days is mass pablum that's the same in every city, is voicetracked and doesn't dare stray from the format highway. Listeners are sometimes quite surprised to hear someone giving the studio phone number and then actually answering the phone and to send an email and get a quick reply.

WNHU West Haven always has an Irish music show on St. Patrick's Day. Some older fellow, from the community, is the host, not a college student, and the music is old-fashioned sentimental Irish/Irish-American stuff ("Danny Boy," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "The Rose of Tralee," etc.) along with a few jigs and reels.
