Stan...Love the show!

I understand ratings, but WTF is ClearChannel thinking by firing an icon like Stan Savran? No one is as knowledgeable on as many topics and more a gentleman. I hope fans will start a letter writing campaign the likes of which has never been seen!

Catbird,I'm just as disappointed as you are for Stan getting the boot. I enjoy listening to him more than Mark Madden because he is professional and does not treat callers like dirt. I wonder if Tim Benz will beat Mark Madden in the ratings when he goes over to Fox Sports.

I'm genuinely curious about this because I don't know the answer. Is Savran such an icon that he's making so much money that his show isn't profitable? Even with high ratings, if you don't sell enough spots to cover a really high talent salary, doesn't it make sense to reduce expenses if what you lose in revenue is less than what you save on expenses? For discussion sake with imaginary numbers, if Stan is paid $100, and they sell $105 in commercials, wouldn't they be better off paying some relative unknown $40 and selling only $60 in commercials?

Clear Channel would hire the unknown for $40 AND still sell $105 in commercials. They pocket the rest.

Stan has always been great from his days at wtkn (wwsw am in the 70's now fox sports Pgh) through his days at wtae tv and radio. I'm still upset that ch. 4 didn't renew his contract back in 1991. I hope fox sports doesn't drop his show on tv, it was bad enough they let Guy Junker go. All the best to you Stan, and still hope to hear you on Steeler's hot line after the game.

I happened to hear all of his final show. Stan was characteristically classy and
generous. He even had kind words to say about his successor. Too many others
would have, if told they were doing their last show, gone scorched-earth and blown
up the popsicle stand. By refusing to do this Stan proved that he is a much bigger
man than those who made the decision to pull the plug.
