Stan Savran Returns to AM 970

Interesting, it was originally announced that it would be Tunch and Wolf in that time slot.

With Stan vs Vinnie and Cook on the Fan, 970 has a shot (although I have to say Vinnie grows on you after a while, he seems like a genuinely friendly guy and the callers like him).

Tunch & Wolf were announced as part of the ESPN970 line-up. We knew, however, that wouldn't last, because those guys only talk football, and pretty much only talk Steelers. They will be on for one additional week after the final Steelers game of the season, whenever that may be.

Is that not also still a brokered show? It had always been that way in the past.

I like Vinnie. He gives the show a bit of non-Pittsburgh perspective, and isn't nearly as "I'm right and you're wrong" as I find both GG and AF to be.

Saw on another board Stan is returning for the 10a-noon slot on am970 after the Steeler season.

Wow! Talk about coming full, full circle in your career. Doesn't this make 3 times for Stan on 970?
Glad to hear it though. 970 has been simulcasting Mike and Mike in the Morning the past few days.
My guess is we will start hearing promos on 1250 urging us to make the move down the dial over
the next two weeks. Then an abrupt cut to Hampster Dance.

What is Greg Benedetti doing? Can they sign him up for 6-9PM?

Yes, three tours at 970 for Stan. He came to the market at WTKN, Pittsburgh's TalkNet station. Bendel will do 4-7, and they do plan to have some local talk from 7-9 before picking up ESPN programming.

No, he came to the market in January of 1976 when the station was still WWSW, the old Double Double. They were doing a full-service format with Bob Kopler news in the morning. Jim Tedder (Ted James) was the PD and hired Stan from a station in Orlando. WWSW was still playing music for much of the day with Ed Price, Dave Shallenberger and Ray Lehman.

WTKN didn't happen until several years later.

Greg Benedetti is retired and living in Beaver Falls, his hometown. He will be glad to hear someone remembered him.

I was just a pup when he did his show, but listened often and always enjoyed it.
I remember when Stan came to town the Pittsburgh Press ran photos of them both,
and they bore a rather eerie resemblance to one another at the time.

I listened to Bendel the other night and he was doing his show live from the Bigham Tavern,
a bar you could not possibly know existed unless you had spent considerable time on Mt. Washington.

It was called the Bigham Tavern for many years before it was Kaib's.
Used to be an old "shotgun" bar with a single row of stools and a big old
black-and-white TV hanging off the wall, like the bar on All in the Family.

Have had the opportunity to listen to Stan on 970 a couple of times this week.
He is again showing why he is a consummate pro. His show is tight, well-prepared
and well-structured. Covers more ground more effectively in an hour than other
shows where the host meanders around aimlessly for 3 or 4 hours.

If Stan were doing four hours, he'd be meandering, too. An hour is perfect because you're never going to get to everything. Isn't one of the oldest rules of show biz "leave them wanting more?"

Does this mean that you acknowledge that radio is part of show business?

If that were true I would expect most shows to lead off with a strong first hour and then tail off.
It seems that is rarely the case.

I would agree with you if most listeners made it a point to sit down and tune in radio programs from the beginning. Most four hour shows work on the assumption that people are constantly tuning in and tuning out. The exception would be KDKA.
