standards always nulled to the west??

I was speaking to a few older folks today, who live in the Morristown area, they told me that when Standards were on 1130 and later on 1560, there was always a reception problem to the west of the city, in the Northern/Western New Jersey sections. I did not live up that way but I just wanted to know if this was true, why was that.

Both 1130 and 1560 have a directional signal pattern to protect other stations on the same channel, and the effect is that there is much less signal radiated to the west than non-directional stations such as 660, 880 and 770.

Thanks for the info, so they were right..how far west do these two signals travel?
