Standards and Scrappers

Today 1570 WHTX (pending) licensed to Warren, OH announced that they have secured the broadcast rights of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (affiliate of the Cleveland Indians). Also announced was the format flip to adult standards from its current classic hits format, determining that the format hole was too large to let sit open.

Great moves IMO. Signing the Scrappers was a surprise... but not necessarily. WELW/1330 of course did very well as the flagship of the Captains for several years. And WHTX has also already landed both the Penguins and Pirates.

Now, if only there was a way to bring Gary Rhamy back to morning drive... ;)

The format switch to adult standards will officially take place on March 22. Also the station name has now been tweaked to "The Fabulous 1570 WHTX: Youngstown's Original Hits." ;D

Good choice Chris (even though I love oldies). I dig Frank, Dean, etc etc. I carried two standards programs at WTOD/Toledo. "The Sounds of Sinatra" and "American Standards by the Sea" (great show!!!) hosted by Dick Robinson (from his yacht). Robinson of course a station owner himself and the founder of the Connecticut School(s) of Broadcasting which he sold years ago... and recently repurchased. If you contact them tell Walt I said hello.

A lot of experts believe Adult Standards stations will not work because of the upper demos.
I love the format and wish Chris nothing but the very best.

I would be interested what many of you believe are the key program elements to run a succressful Adult Standards station.

I made many mistakes getting finally to the point of changing the format. Believing in people I shouldn't have. And I never expected both 1390 and 600 to drop the format, so I was caught off guard, after making a previous decision.

Standards or soft ac has evolved over the years, into much more of an old MOR or AC format. I think it certainly works in markets like Youngstown, Pittsburgh etc. with older demographics. And of course you need to still provide enough local
content to still make it special. I will do that.

Some more ideas will starting soon including a local outdoors show and some local early rock n roll shows. Thanks again for
the kind words and your input.

Good Moves Chris, Local Radio At it's best.Next Incress Daytime Power to 1,000 Watts. You Are far enough from Latrobe [ie WQTW.]

This is my educated guess, but I presume that WHTX also has to protect second-adjacent WAKR/1590 in Akron and the (unfortunately now-silent) WZUM/1590 in Pittsburgh.

Plus there's a slight null in the northwest, I think it was to protect the long-gone and long-ago-deleted WATJ/1560 in Chardon and *could* be removed.

Again, this is all just pure guesswork with no actual engineering experience on my part. :p

The very popular Pittsburgh disc jockey Frankie Day will join the new Fabulous 1570 WHTX hosting a two hour music and memories oldies show on Saturday mornings. We're talking to several Cleveland area jocks about doing the same.

Do you have details that I don't know Phil?
When Myron Jones moved 1570 to Campbell Ohio from Erie Pa. the FCC spacing rules were tougher, he had to use 250watts so as to protect WQTW 1570,[1,000 Watts] Latrobe, which is 115.23 miles away. WANB 1580 Waynesburg Pa was also 250 Watts at that time. They were 50 miles South of WZUM 1590.WNEU 1600 wheeling was 5,000 watts ND and 56 miles from WZUM .WNEU 1600 is 56 miles from 1580
Waynesburg and 89 miles from Latrobe WQTW.

1570, 1580 and 1600 are all ND. WZUM with 1,000 Watts is directional in a Fan Pattern to the North East. I know for a fact that WZUM had a signal in Latrobe.[ The North Huntington Twp public works garage listened to the Polka Party on WZUM every morning.] WANB was able to raise Power in the 70’s to 1,000 Watts ND. And not interfere with the other top dial stations. WZUM and WAKR are both on 1590 WAKR 5,000 ND, and WZUM 1,000 Directional. They are 117 miles apart.

WAKR 1590 is 47 miles from WHTX 1570, WPTW Piqua Ohio is 245 miles from WHTX .On 1560 WTNS Coshocton Ohio is 120 miles from WHTX, WCNW Fairfield Ohio is 271 miles. There are no stations in your area on 1550 1580 or 1600. And now 1580 Waynesburg is on 1210.

1570, 1580, 1590 and 1600 in South West Pa/ Wheeling WVa. A 90 mile radius did not override each other in their service area’s.Again WHTX is 115.23 miles from WQTW. I see no reason why WHTX 1570 cannot increase Daytime power to at least 1,000 watts. It has already been increased to 500.WQTW sits at the foot of the Laurel Highlands. Their signal only covers Westmorland. Eastern Allegheny and Northern Indiana County’s they don’t get passed the Allegheny River.

WZUM/1590 is basically dead in the water and will either have its' license turned in or be deleted very soon.

Ironically, Chris tried to buy the station, but the city that owned the land WZUM's towers stood on decided to tear them down and redevelop the land (if they haven't been removed yet, they will be soon). :(

The new Fabulous 1570 WHTX (Youngstown-Warren's Original Hits) is on the air. Much more content later today and a new deal with Accuweather starts on March 28th.

1250WTAE.. I am interested why you chose Dial Global Lounge and what you think of the formtg so far? It doesn't seem the network s offering a lot of network features yet.

Hi Pioneer. I chose it for two reasons. 1) All the music is local on the hard drive and 2) their Storq automation unit is outstanding technology that I know inside and out.

But I agree with you on the features. But we've added several local early rock n roll shows on the weekend, along with several other speciality shows, all local on the weekends, with more to follow.
