STANDARDS & B-MUSIC STATIONS: STATE BY STATE

Am curious as to how many are left doing good music....

Here's what I know about the northeast:

MAINE:
(all 4 stations are within 50 miles of each other)
WBAE- 1490 - Portland (standards, satellite) (slave station WVAE - 1400 - Biddeford)
WYAR-FM - 88.1 - Yarmouth (local DEEP cuts of very old standards music, but not BM)
WJTO - 730 - Bath/Brunswick (standards, with 15% mix of BM)

VERMONT:
(none?)

NEW HAMPSHIRE:
WFEA - 1370 - Manchester (standards, satellite)
(note: WEZS-1350-Laconia WAS BM; now smooth jazz)

MASSACHUSETTS:
WJIB - 740 - Cambridge/Boston (standards with 15% BM)

RHODE ISLAND:
(none?)

CONNECTICUT:
an FM owned by Catholic group near Hartford, that does BM part-time.

NEW YORK:
WHLI - 1100 - Hempstead (standards)
WLGZ - 990 - Rochester (standards)
Two AM's north of Albany still doing Standards?
(note: Buffalo folks get CHWO - 740 from Toronto, as 1230 dropped format)
(note: WVNJ- 1160 - Oakland NJ seems to have filled up most of their airtime with talk, financial talk, and doctor-shows.)

any others?
Disclosure: I own and locally program WJIB and WJTO.

Will you be streaming WJIB or WJTO in the near future? I'd like to be able to listen to the marvelous music you have to offer. Thanks in advance.

Texas has:

KAAM 770, Dallas (standards - at least sort of)

KPYK 1570, Terrell (DFW area) Standards, but it leans more towards Big Bands

KZQX 104.7, 105.3 & 101.9 Chalk Hill, Kilgore - Longview Jazzy Popular Standards

There is a high powered NCE FM in Killeen, That is (or at least was) a BEZ station It may be KNCT, but I'm not sure about that. It puts out a signal that makes it into the northern part of Austin and goes at least as far north as Waco.

There may be others There are several related stations in Weatherford - Mineral Wells area that are Standards at night.

Here's what's on in Iowa:

ABC's Timeless Classics is on:
KCHE 1440, Cherokee
KMRY 1450, Cedar Rapids, with local programming AM/PM drive, and some on weekends.
KCHA 1580, Charles City
KDLS 1310, Perry
KDAO 1190, Marshalltown
KWLO 1330, Waterloo
KQWC 1570, Webster City

Dial Global's Adult Standards is on:
KDEC 1240, Decorah
KOKX 1310, Keokuk

Jones Music of Your Life is on:
KCLN 1390, Clinton

Locally programmed standards is on:
KRNT 1350, Des Moines. KRNT was with Westwood one's AM Only from the beginning, but dropped it some years ago before WWI started making all the changes. They still sound a lot like the old AM Only format.

I'll add Tennessee:

Knoxville:
WOEZ 88.3 FM - EZ 88- Local, non-commercial. B/EZ, Standards, some soft AC
WQBB 1040 AM - MOYL feed.

Nashville:
WAMB 1200 AM - local, very old standards last time I heard them (about a year ago)

Memphis:
WMPS 1210 AM - MOYL feed.

Honolulu:

KHUI 99.5 FM - Dial Global feed
KRTR 650 AM - a mix of Soft AC and Oldies with an occasional instrumental, pretty much like WDUV 105.5 FM in Tampa.

Actually, if you don't know, Dial Global has reversed direction with this format. The AC garbage is still there, but the good stuff seems to be making a comeback. People here say they're playing songs they never played or haven't played in years.

Rather than copy everything I already said, I'll just send you here:

That's encouraging. I haven't heard the format since Dial Global took over. I used to be able to get it on 3 or 4 stations (not all with great signals) but over the years, they've all changed formats. All I get now is Timeless Classics daytime only, as their night signal is too weak.

I feel sorry for you if all you have is Pointless Classics.

RHODE ISLAND:
(none?)

Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts are stuck with the "Pointless Classics" that are aired by the Hall Communications duopoly of:

1450 WLKW, West Warwick, RI, and
1340 WNBH, New Bedford, MA.

Disclosure: I own and locally program WJIB and WJTO.

At last check: Connecticut has:

- WQUN AM 1220 Hamden/New Haven; owned and operated by Quinnipiac University. Music of Your Life.
- WICH AM 1310 Norwich. Either MOYL or WW1 Adult Standards.

MICHIGAN

ABC Timeless Favorites format:
- WXLA - 1180 AM, Dimondale (Lansing market). The Stardust/Timeless format was carried by WILS (1320 AM) from about 1990 or so until last year, when WILS went Talk and Timeless moved to newly-acquired sister station WXLA (formerly Urban AC "Mix 1180").
- WFNT - 1470 AM, Flint ("Unforgettable 1470")
- WMHG - 1600 AM, Muskegon ("Magic")
- WMPX - 1490 AM, Midland, and simulcast partner WMRX 97.7 FM, Beaverton

Music of Your Life:
- WDBC - 680 AM, Escanaba
- WCCY - 1400 AM, Houghton (only during the day; at night it's Sports Talk)
- WGRY - 1230 AM, Grayling
- WCBY - 1240 AM, Cheboygan/Mackinaw City
- WIOS - 1480 AM, Tawas City/East Tawas

Dial Global Adult Standards:
- WHLS - 1450 AM, Port Huron, and simulcast partner WHLX, 1590 AM, Marine City.
- WMBN - 1340 AM, Petoskey. The station calls itself "Michigan's Beautiful North" - the same slogan used by sister station 96.3 FM (now WLXT) when it played B/EZ as WMBN-FM. They also play some old WMBN-FM jingles in their imaging.

Non-satellite Standards or Soft AC:
- WTRV - 100.5 FM, Walker/Grand Rapids. "The River." A Soft/Gold AC, very much like WDUV. Does very well in the ratings, as Grand Rapids seems to have long been a B/EZ-friendly market; the market actually had B/EZ as late as the mid-1990s on WKEZ 96.1 FM (now WMAX-FM).
- WAKV - 980 AM, Otsego/Plainwell. Designed to sound like former Full Service MOR giant WKZO (590 AM) in Kalamazoo; to that end, it actually employs several former WKZO DJs. They play a lot of lost gold, like "Tell Me A Lie" by Sami Jo (1974).

There is also WJZQ (92.9 FM) in Cadillac in northern Michigan. Known as "The Breeze," it used to be a satellite (Jones) Smooth Jazz station but now airs local voicetracking with a very wide-ranging and eclectic AC/70s-80s Oldies/Jazz Vocals mix. Very wide playlist, ranging from Manilow, Carpenters and Newton-John to AC currents by Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani and even Plain White Ts "Hey There, Delilah," some contemporary versions of standards (Stewart, Buble, Krall etc.), and some local northern Michigan artists too.

In New Mexico/West Texas:

KENW FM (Portales, N.M.) plus translators covering eastern N.M. and Midland/Andrews TX.
Public radio station which has a beautiful music format during the day (9AM-4:30 PM) and has recently included more "adult standards". Also has short (1-2 minute) feature series programs included along with the music such as Pulse of the Planet, Earth & Sky, Ask Dr. Science, etc. Has a classical music format at night plus NPR news programs.

KWEL 1070 AM Midland (mainly talk format) has an Adult standards music program Saturdays from 6-10 AM and KBST 1490 AM Big Spring also has some music, usually older big band on the weekends.
There really are no other adult standards/beautiful stations in this area. Almost all other AM stations which play music are country, classic country or Spanish.

KMMZ 101.3 FM in Crane TX. had an adult standards (Dial Global) format for a year from 2006-2007 but has since gone back to Spanish.

Ohio

Timeless Favorites:
WNCO - Ashland - 1340 AM
WFOB - Fostoria - 1430 AM
WERT - Van Wert - 1220 AM
WMVO (1300 AM - Mt. Vernon) and WPTW (1570 AM - Piqua) both have aired the Stardust/Timeless format in the past but I am unsure if they still do. WPTW and WFOB were also affiliates of ABC's Memories/Unforgettable Favorites until the network was discontinued.

Music of Your Life:
WCSM - Celina - 1350 AM "Mellow 1350"
WBCO - Bucyrus - 1540 AM
WIOI - New Boston/Portsmouth - 1010 AM
Formerly WSRW (1590 AM - Hillsboro) but it flipped to Classic Country

Dial Global:
None that I know of. WMNI, WAKR and WLKR (1510 AM - Norwalk) used to all be Westwood One affiliates but WMNI and WAKR are now locally programmed and WLKR flipped to Oldies and is now Sports.
WILE-FM 97.7 (Byesville) IDs as "America's Best Music" on its website but I can't tell from the site if they run Dial Global's format or not. I've also heard talk they have switched or will be switching frequencies. Can someone tell me what's up with this station?

Independently programmed commercial stations:
WAKR - Akron - 1590 AM
WMNI - Columbus - 920 AM
WSOM - Salem - 600 AM
WATH - Athens - 970 AM - according to their website they have a Nostalgia music program in the late mornings, and the main playlist is 60s-80s similar to Timeless Favorites.
WTTF - Tiffin - 1600 AM - also similar to Timeless Favorites, chiefly 60s-80s AC
WNIO - Youngstown - 1390 AM - after KABL died in San Francisco, Clear Channel directed listeners via KABL's former Internet stream site to WNIO's website to listen to their stream. I think they used the WW1 format in the past, and they may still use it in some dayparts(?).

There is also WDPN 1310 AM in Alliance, which is identified by Radio-Locator as Easy Listening. I don't know what their programming consists of however.

Non-comm:
WKHR - Bainbridge (Cleveland) - 91.5 FM
WMKV - Reading (Cincinnati) - 89.3 FM
WOBO - Batavia - 88.7 FM - Big Band and Nostalgia music make up a large part of this station's programming.

_________________________________________________It was Dial Global as of 3 weeks ago... drove out that way and heard Jeff Rollins & Chick Watkins. When 97.7 starts to fade heading east on I-70 out of Cambridge, you can pick up Dial Global again on 1400 out of Wheeling.

Thank you, BlueHen, for the clarification.

Update - looks like WMNI is back to the Dial Global format, according to yes.com.

Let's see... That should make Dial Global available in the car for almost 200 miles from western PA to around Springfield OH. I didn't hear it at all across Indiana or Illinois, although there was a Music Of Your Life affiliate on 1550 probably from New Castle IN.

Add 2 more Maine Stations:

WDEA-1370 Ellsworth runs mostly ABC "Timeless Favorites"; but has local morning show 6-9AM Weekdays hosted by Rick Foster. He features much more standards/oldies 50's/60's music than during rest of day with "Timeless FAvorites" satellite feed. Also carry Boston Red Sox Baseball, and local Mount Desert Island High School football and Basketball in season.. Excellent 5,000-watt signal on 1370 along coast from Penobscot Bay into New Brunswick, and blasts across the Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia. Directional signal to E-NE at night..

WRMO 93.7 Milbridge (25 miles east of Ellsworth)
115 watts in MONO!!!! "Songs you know, Music you love" Wide variety of Standards, Oldies Soft Ac and EZL...Only covers about a 10 miles radius, with single bay antenna atop 30-foot high building, but listenable from Winter Harbor to Addison along the coast, as well as adjacent towns of Cherryfield and Harrington. They hope to raise power soon and locate site for new tower..

Also the religious stationed mentioned in original post is WJMJ 88.9 Hartford CT, owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford. They also have translators in Meriden on 93.1 and New Haven on 107.1, I believe.
