Stanley Cup Playoffs On National TV

This will probably be the first time since the 2008 Olympics that a live sporting event aired on CNBC. (And no, I'm not counting the Westminster Dog Show... ::) )

NHL first round playoffs schedule: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=626625

Without counting any possible games 5 through 7, there will be 17 scheduled appearances on NBC Sports Network, with another 8 on CNBC. Keep in mind that the blackout rules may cut that number down, depending on where you live. Since the Rangers and Devils are in the first round expect that MSG is going to make a decent sum from advertising.

How about the 2010 Olympics. Curling did quite well there.

Now I have an alternative to the Center Ice package (or moving to Canada).

Thanks, NBC! :)

First night of the playoffs. So far, the one notable thing is CNBC decided to put the transparent bug near the bottom right corner of the screen, as if people wouldn't know where to find CNBC before tuning to the channel. I think the diehard fans of the teams involved would have figured it all out. ;)

In short, starting with the second round, it's turn down the TV volume and turn up the Penguins Radio Network (presuming, of course, that the Pens can get past the Flyers in Round One).

No, I don't care much for NBC's hockey coverage.

Yeah, I hear the Penguins' Game 1 loss was brutal... :D

Live sports on CNBC might be an oddity, but at least it ensures American hockey teams' playoff rounds will be seen on American cable television. Recall last year, when the entire Nashville/Anaheim opening round series was "blacked out" in the States.

Last night's three games were one of the best playoff openings I can recall.

Philly and Pitt went after each other hammer and tong with Pitt going up 3-0 before Philly came back to tie in regulation and win in OT.

Nashville and Detroit had a barn burner as well with Detroit coming within a goal just before regulation ended. Nashville's goalie put on a goal tending clinic.

Vancouver vs L.A. was a bit less dramatic and fairly evenly played until the Kings clinched it right near the end. Vancouver's goalie Luongo was outstanding in a losing effort.

Does anyone know if CNBC is going to carry any games on The Canadian side? Or will they toss on repeats of earlier programming due to some Canadain rights shortage?
