Stanley Cup Ratings Drop

It doesn't help that the Stanley Cup playoffs got exactly ONE mention over local TV following the conclusion here in Phoenix.
We don't have an NHL team anymore, and are very unlikely to get one in the future.
And yes, we do have a passionate hockey fan base.
Yes, but most of that fan base is in the SE Valley, where there is a lot of passion for hockey but little money. Most of us are fans of the teams we grew up watching anyway (Blackhawks, Red Wings, Bruins, the Canadian teams, etc).
The NBA Finals were constantly mentioned (as the games were shown locally on ABC). Even the poor Diamondbacks, Suns and the out-of-season Cardinals got more TV time than the Stanley Cup. TV in Phoenix just sucks!
The D'backs are at least somewhat of a contender, and it looks like they'll be staying at Chase Field. The Suns were dealing with the Kevin Durant mess, and the NBA Draft is coming up. The Cardinals are the Cardinals; the NFL is still king.

The consensus on hockey related forums I’ve read is that Phoenix won’t get another NHL team until 2037 at the earliest, and that depends on finally getting a new arena built in the central or eastern parts of the market. Atlanta and Houston appear to be the leading candidates for the next expansion.

BTW if Atlanta does get Thrashers 2.0 it appears that the Winnipeg Jets 1.0 history (1972-1996) of the dormant Arizona Coyotes franchise will be sent to the current Jets 2.0, with that team’s previous Thrashers 1.0 history (1999-2011) being sent to the new Atlanta franchise.

It's just one data point, but my daughter, who's 21 and lives in NYC, has no linear TV in her apartment of three girls, and she says none of her friends do, either.

"TV" for them is watching streaming shows on Netflix or Apple TV on a laptop.

It doesn't matter what's on "2, 4, 5 or 7", it's simply not reaching them.
Yup... I agree here Fybush. I'm in the process of buying a house. I'm a young guy in my early 20s. There won't be a TV anywhere in my new house. On the occasion I want to watch something, I'll just do so on my laptop.

My younger brother is going to be moving into an apartment shortly. While he'll have a physical TV, there's no way he'll have cable or any kind of linear TV. He'll just subscribe to some sort of sports streaming service and watch through that.

The talk of who was playing does not change the fact that the exact same two teams played last year and ratings were almost twice as high on ABC. OTA still gets bigger ratings for championship events.
Remember, last year the Panthers were up 3-0 and the series went 7. There was more drama last year.

I’m in my 40’s and have four TVs. Three are inherited - a smart TV, two plain flatscreens, one of which is one I bought, and my dad/grandparents first TV, a 1957 Sylvania Halolite black and white TV that I haven't even tried using, because the capacitors (among other parts) are probably bad.

I only use the smart TV, and the last time I had cable was 20 years ago. I’ve lived with Gen Xers, seniors and other Millennials in the last 10 years and none of them had cable or OTA either, we would just watch Netflix or Youtube.
