Direct streaming URL for Austin City Limits Radio as of this posting (now on KGSR-HD2-93.3 and K246BD-97.1 Sunset Valley, TX):

Note: the streaming URLs could "flip" at some point so that the streaming IDs match the signal frequencies
or they could just be left alone. Stay tuned...

I hope the ratings for KGSR 'reach for the stars'! We've seen the Soft AC boom in many markets, including Seattle (where KSWD was #4 in November) and Philadelphia (where the 106.1 already reached the top 10)...could it happen in Austin?

In those markets with a significant later-generation Hispanic population as well as an Hispanic influence on pop music stations in the past, it's important that station operators keep that segment in mind when researching, designing playlists and even rotations.

Another owner jumps into Soft AC. First it was Cox, with WDUV Tampa for more than a decade. #1 book after book. But since it grew out of one of the last Easy Listening stations in a large city, not too many took notice. Then Cox put the format in Miami and Jacksonville. iHeart tried it in San Francisco to much success. Then Entercom did it in Seattle, again a success. Cumulus is trying Soft AC in Minneapolis. And now Emmis is trying it in Austin.

It is odd that Emmis went through a big change on 93.3 to "Austin City Limits Radio." All that work for only a few months. Now all those DJs are dismissed and the format is being put on a translator, 97.1 K246BD, no doubt to run automated.

But Austin has two non-commercial AAA stations, 98.9 KUTX, owned by the University of Texas, run by NPR affiliate KUT-FM. And Sun Radio, on 1490 KTSN, 100.1 K261DW and four other translators around Central Texas. So maybe KGSR was having trouble competing.

Timing was pretty bad, as this week marks the annual South By Southwest festival, and a lot happening around Austin City Limits.

The reality is AAA was a ratings disaster, and this was the weakest link in the Emmis cluster.

Austin Was In Dire Need Of An Adult Contemporary Now We Have 1 Lets Hope It Last A Long Time This Is My Favorite Format I Knew 93.3 Ever Since Mix 93.3 KMXX Killeen/Austin I Think That Was Some Form Of AC

I assume KGSR is still on the Bertram tower, at least for now. The new authorized facility will have much less overall coverage area, but will do better in the core Austin market.

I recall when the Bertram tower went on the air in the late 1980's (as CHR KBTS "B-93") and being amazed at the blockbuster coverage area it had in Central Texas. However in Austin proper it was overshadowed by the nearby Western Hills signals. Wondering if there will be some future new drop-in or frequency moves onto 93.3 in the outer areas once served by the Bertram facility.

When KIXS upgraded and became KBTS B-93.3, that was when the station was at its most successful ratings-wise. Even despite the signal, it gave KHFI a real run for its money. The irony is that the only reason it went away was that Rusk, which had recently acquired KHFI, took over it in an LMA and wanted it out of competition. Booth, which owned KBTS through Genesis Broadcasting, was getting ready to merge with Broadcast Alchemy and become Secret Communications and decided it didn’t want to be in Texas anymore.

As I suspected, the direct streaming URL for Star 93.3 Austin has changed from sign-on.

Star is also on iHeartRadio as of yesterday. It’s not yet on TuneIn, but I suspect it'll be there soon as well.

I Guess Austin Just Doesnt KNow How To Program Soft AC AnyMore Since Majic 95.5 Became To Much Like A Pop Station In 2005
