Star 93.3

Just a random thought...

Coast 93.3 at this point in time could get away with being Star 93.3 as they wanted to be originally now that Star 93.7 is gone. Oh well, much too late :) I am still waiting however for Providence to get Jack'ed! Not sure if it will be a format that will die in a few years such as 80s Hits and Jammin' Oldies, but time will tell. I sort of grown a liking to the new format :)
______________

I posted this a couple weeks ago. I for one loved Star 93.7, thank god we can listen to it online still. But I think it would be great if Coast flipped to Star

I was wondering if Coast would flip back to the very short lived Star 93.3 I know they flipped to Coast because of the "confusion" it supposedly would cause with Star 93.7 around, but now that 93.7 has flipped to Mike FM (biggest mistake in Entercom history, but I digress.....) What are the chances of Clear Channel going to Star?

When they decided to become Star 93.3, it was simply a change of moniker. They still kept Hot AC as the format since the early '90s, but I guess it would be nice to have an up-tempo format like Star 93.7 was in Providence, but I just don't know if it would work for ratings.

Also, I just wanted to make it clear that I personally would like to see a Jack format in Providence, but not at the expense of a good format. I see the reasoning behind making for example CBS-FM (oldies) into Jack, even though I am saddened by the loss of it. Times change and stations need to try new things in order to gain ratings; because when it comes down to it weither we like it or not, it's all about the money (after all, radio is a business!)

Coast 93.3 and Cool 102

It would be great if Coast 93.3 became Star 93.3 with the same format as the old Star in Boston. I would love to have an all dance station in Providence. Providence has two rock stations, 94 HJY and 95.5 WBRU plus 92 PRO FM and Coast 93.3 which also play a lot of rock, but no station that plays much dance music. Also, yes it would be cool to have the Jack format in town. Right now the closest thing we have to a Jack station that can be heard locally is Cool 102 (101.9) on the Cape. Cool plays a lot of songs that other stations do not. I've even heard them mention they have 1000 songs in their playlist. Does anyone think Cool 102 may go with the Jack format? It may work with their tremendous coverage area including the Cape, all of southeastern Massachusetts, and all of Rhode Island. It would be a great way to expose the format to a large number of listeners especially in the Cape Cod, New Bedford/Fall River, and Providence markets.
______________

FUN 107.1 plays mostly dance music.........and it's actually a pretty darn good station. Comes in clearly RI. They broadcast out of Dartmouth or Fairhaven or something where KKB is/was.

Cool's website says they play everything as long as it's cool, & they are. If anything I see them periodically adding more recent songs but not losing that rock base. I've heard newer music by 311 & Ben Harper & even the new Springsteen.

Re: Coast 93.3 and Cool 102

the only way you will hear anything current on Cool 102 is if it is an absolute smash hit that rings absolute familiarity. usually a song that is the Gold or power re-current for triple A or AC. and that's fine - the station sounds great.

Its been an argument of mine for years that when there's a new album coming out by an artist who fits the Cool demo(i.e Bruce, Stevie Wonder, Hootie, Etheridge, all this summer), the station should be playing it in a current rotation. but right now, they dont have a current rotation, nor do they report to any trades. too bad - because the labels would love to dump promo money into this market (especially during the summer with a 3,000 seat concert venue in Hyannis) with the right station playing new triple A/AC artists that are not completely ecclectic and unknown. And Cool is the right station to do that for many reasons.

They're in a strip mall at the intersection of Rt. 6 & 140 in Fairhaven.

I wish Cool 102 would add some current stuff, too. They a very listenable station and there's no reason they shouldn't add something like the new Springsteen single. Maybe they just don't want to compete with WMVY (which I just noticed has started simulcasting on 96.5FM in Newport, RI).

Cool 102 is playing Devils & Dust. MVY is a different format completely. Love both stations, but I wish I could pick up MVY in more locations across the state. Sometimes I'll catch them in the oddest places.

Re: MVY and Cool 102

no slap against Jim cuz we like him a lot, but if Cool had the right PD in there who understood how to create and support a current playlist that fits with the MO of its programming, co-pro the right shows in Providence and on the Cape, befriend the local label community and actively support their B-list artists, they would bury MVY for good. MVY, which historically is the worst rated 12+ in the market, has an eccelctic and loyal fan base, but no TSL, forced listening or branding campaign to support what it does on air or to promote its new signal in RI. Heck, they dont even do anything locally on the cape to builld its audience or raise awareness. Cool has the TSL, excellent forced listening initiatives and its fan base is getting bigger on the Cape and in Southeastern MA. They could put it over the top and reap some serious financial benefits in sales and promotion that major labels can provide with a currents playlist, but maybe they're just happy with what they've accomplished so far.
