STAR 94.1

My wife told me she got called earlier tonight by a research company here in San Diego, clearly set up by Clear Channel. She said they asked what her favorite station was a year ago and what she listened to now? And, did she ever listen to Star 100.7 in the past, and had she ever listened to My 94.1? Then they asked, "if their name was changed to STAR 94.1 how she would feel about that? Or, "what if the names were combined to MyStar 94.1 would she still listen?".

What's up with that? Are they nuts? Is this really going to happen?

Knowing a few people in San Diego at the CC Cluster, I know first hand there is a change on the way. A well known morning host formerly of "My" is planned to be sitting in the soon to be vacant program directors seat and current PD Duncan Payton will soon be searching the want adds. Mel McKay we also suffer in the change because the team planned to resurface at "My" is the former show of (Jagger and Kristy) Mark Jagger and Kristy Knight-Jagger! The duo's planned return to San Diego's airwaves is September 1st 2005.

There's a decent chance Jagger and Kristi are desperate enough to go back with out being offered a ton of money. You got to give Jim a break he's not a genius, but he did the best he could, I don't see 94.1 in his future.

I don't believe this is correct now. I've just been listening to them on-line, and they are running promos that Duncon and Mel are returning to afternoons and at that Jeff and Jer are comming to "My94.1." They wouldn't be promoting that if it were not the case, otherwise it would confuse the listeners.

I hate to burst the bubble, (and I've been wrong before, like with 100.7 becomming Jack), but I do not believe that any of what's being mentioned in this thread is accurate.

Just stating an opinion.

I hope you're right Garrett. But, we DID get that call yesterday...it's legit. It may or may not happen, but CC is definitely "testing the water" to see
what kind of reaction this would cause.

It would be a huge mistake for them. It would be as if the dude who runs the coffee stand in front of my building at work suddenly started calling himself "Starbucks"...it just wouldn't be the same!

I disagree that it would be a mistake. On the contrary, most listeners can't really tell the difference between one frequency and another, it's all in the branding. The truth is, unlike us radio-geeks, most people don't even realize that Star100.7, and My 94-1 are owned by sepearate companies.

And why not capitalize on the legendary name? Star was a very successful radio station. Nobody expected them to just go "poof" one day and become Jack FM. I'm convinced this left alot of listeners scratching their heads. Radio is more like a toaster. People find the setting they like, and set it there. The hard part for CC will be getting the message out that Star has "moved" to 94.1. But, that's easy, because that's where Jeff and Jer come in. Loyals will follow them to 94.1, and then keep it there for Star.

Comparing radio to Starbucks and a coffee stand are not valid analogies. It's very obvious the difference between a Starbucks and rolling coffee cart. But guess what, I can't tell the difference between "Starbucks" and "the Coffee Bean" either. Once the Star seal and the same airstaff and music appears, listeners won't even know the difference, except that it's at 94.1, and maybe has a clearer sound.

That's not to say that I believe it will happen either. But I may very well be wrong, and perhaps this is what CC wants, so that they can suprise everybody.

So yeah, it's possible, but I'll believe it when I see it (and I hope it does happen). But no, I don't agree that it's a mistake, not if it works!

It'll work if the airstaff is aloud the same freedom they had under
Tracy Johnson...assuming they can piece the original staffers together. The airstaff at Star 100.7 was good, but they were just executing Tracy's ideas.
It takes great leadership in all departments...programming, promotions, production, sales, and even I.T., to create the impact that they had.
CC is spread too thin, and from what friends of mine tell me, that company is full of nothing but "bean counters" who's only concern is their shareholders, and NOT creating "magic" on the air.

But, what the heck do I know...I just sell real estate?

Good point, but don't forget, they have Bob Bolinger now, who was also part of Star and Q106. So he knows a thing or two also!

As for real estate, well heck, so is Coe Lewis, Stacy Taylor...etc...

Mason 94.1 PD?

So, lemme guess -- 99.3 is about to go away, Dave Mason, a longtime Jacor / Clear Channel dude is gonna need a gig - so they blow out Duncan, who is not a longtime Jacor / Clear Channel guy and give Mason Duncan's PD gig at 94.1?

Woah!

Hold on to them boot straps!
None of this has been even close to confirmed. This is all conjecture and rumor spreading. We don't even know for sure what is going to happen to Kool, heck, they may move it to one of Glickenhaus's X's before the ownerships take hold (for exmaple).

Let's just wait before we start guessing about Dave Mason, 94.1, and everything, ok?

This is what's called waiting for the eggs to hatch before countin' them chickins!

Re: My 94.1 - Meet new Programming team

Lord! This market sucks. All they can come up with is to regurgitate the same old stale crap.
Star is gone. All they can think of to do is rename 94.1 and hire former so called talent from there? The Jeff & Jer move is a good one on their part. But Jagger & Kristi? Why not strive to do things better than the past?
At this point, 94.1 has fair numbers with a station that sounds awful. Talentwise, imagingwise, everythingwise. Will someone over there please figure out why after someone voicetracks a break, it takes a full 2 seconds for the song to come to a full level? Most small market stations sound more slick.

Re: Mason 94.1 PD?

You speculate and conjecture on this board all the time.
I get it now. It's okay when you do it. But, it's not if someone else does.

Re: Mason 94.1 PD?

Thanks, dude! I appreciate that.

The more I think about this, the more it makes sense. AC is not foreign to Mason - he voicetracks PM Drive for a clear channel AC station in Dallas, and he may be doing it for other stations, as well. If CC wanted to keep him around, it would be easy for him to slide into that PD role at 94.1.

Spicer has been moved over to the country station so that creates an on-air opening - if I'm not mistaken, you could conceivably have as your staff on 94.1 - Jeff and Jer, then Mason in middays, and then Mel solo in afternoons...or, if the rumors regarding Jagger and Kristie coming back bear out, they would do afternoons and Mel could take nights. That's a strong staff...really strong.

I answer your QUESTION! Meet new Programming team

Everyone is wondering were I get my info from. I can say Im close in the CC company and managment, they confirm to us that a new staff is to take over the programming department. Duncan has made "My" tank in the ratings since he took the chair. Hell "My" is selling lower than ever this summer than in recent years. Since Duncan took over, he tried so hard to get J&K out. Now J&K have the chance to stick Duncan and Mel back in the unemployment line. Duncan and Mel accepted the gig to only shaft the morning team and build a reputation as market leaders to fear. He is the Hitler of San Diego radio. He ran his station in Vegas like a slave driver did back in the 1800's. My frat brother worked there when he was the PD. he said, "Duncan would work his people to death and never honor their vacations during ratings breaks." Unless you kissed his toosh,(LIKE MEL) you never got a break. He is the slave driver and J&K will put his career to and end. How do I know so much, I'm an advertising exec for CC San Diego and my uppers confirm the dismissal of Duncan and Mel. Jeff and Jer will do mornings...YES! Cindy Spicer will stay on Middays! J&K will return to afternoons holding PD (Mark) and APD/MD (Kristy) titles. However the name of "Star" or "My-Star" not a chance. CC will not put anymore money into a new station name since they are spending a fortune to make "MY" the most listen to station in San Diego.

Fundamental flaw

Point of information: Middays is a bad shift for a PD to take. I speak from experience.

Gosh, all this gossip is so thrilling. Who cares?
Besides a couple of employees at Clear Channel?
Get a life!

Re: My 94.1 - Meet new Programming team

My answer.

The new Q 94.1

Jagger and Kristi back doing afternoons.

"Boogie Nights" borrowed from KBIG 104.

94.1 needs to liven up the mix and dump what's not exciting
about the station including stale voice tracked deejays.

d.t. (longing for the good old days of 1970s era KCBQ top 40 radio)

Re: My 94.1 - Meet new Programming team

I've thought of that too, and in a perfect world, the Q name would be a nice alternative if the Star name isn't available, especially since Q96 is supposed to be moving into the market form the Imperial Valley. Naming them Q94 might put an end to that.

But it's all wishful thinking, IMHO.
To me, I'm more interested in what's going to happen, we could talk all day long about what we'd like to see.

The reality is this: on Sept 1, Jeff and Jer will do Mornings, Duncan and Mel afternoons on My94.1, and that is the way it is going to be unless Clear-channel announces otherwise. Anything else (even by comapny sales reps), is just speculation.

Deal with it.

Re: I answer your QUESTION! Meet new Programming team

So, then...what we read about Spicer moving to US95.7 isn't gonna happen after all?
