Star 94 Imaging

Noticed on All Access a few days back that Danny Wright is joining up as Star 94's Creative Services Director. Over the last few trips to the Atlanta area, I've noticed that Star's imaging has been HOT lately. The jingle package they've added within the past year or so (ReelWorld's 2006 Kiss 108 package) sounds great; the TOH that they run out of the stopset around :50 or so is literally one of the hottest top of hour jingles I've ever heard. Also, they've spiced things up with their voiceovers - Dave Foxx is now heard a lot more frequently, while Brian James is still prominently featured as well and sounds as great as always.

My only request? PLEASE tone down the bragging about being the #1 Top 40 station (although I will give them credit for thanking Atlanta in certain liners for (apparently) giving them that distinction). It's not necessary.

Other than that, Star has been sounding really good lately, and not just with regard to imaging. With Q still very solid, although I still contend that they need help with their music, I'm really pumped to watch what happens when the new morning show is in place at 94.1. Should continue to make for a great CHR battle!

Thoughts?

The "Atlanta's number 1 top-40 station" thing on Star was an obvious response to Q100 making that claim. I think Star felt responding was necessary. I'm not sure of the difference between creative services director and production director. But the voice of Star's production director, overnighter Doug Miller, is on the air in commercials way too much in my opinion.

There have been 2 Danny Wrights in radio whom I know of. One has been a well-known country jock, working at WGAR in Cleveland among other stations. The other was a top-40 jock, who once worked at WRQX in Washington (where the country Danny Wright also once worked).

I don't care for using 2 imaging voices. While Brian James was and still sounds great, I think Star should complete the transition to Dave Foxx.

Locally, "Danny Wright All Night" is heard on WTSH/Rome and WNGC/Athens.

What happened to Paul Bahr at that post?

I might not have as big an issue with Star rebutting, although I do think it's a bit unnecessary, if they only did it sporadically in their imaging. Having jocks mention it nearly every time they crack the mic just gets obnoxious after a while if you ask me.

I'm not sure if this Danny Wright has ever worked at WRQX, but I'm pretty sure he's not the country guy. I know Star's Wright has spent some time at WNCI in Columbus, OH, as well as a few other solid stations. I'm interested to hear what he does for the imaging.

See, I disagree on this one. I think having the two split voiceover duties has made the imaging better than ever. The two are great and complement each other; I don't see a need for the imaging to be voiced strictly by one or the other.

What do you think of Q's imaging? I love Jeff Berlin and Kelly Kelly Kelly, and while the liners are well-produced, I think they ought to cut down on the clutter just a tiny bit. Liners in between songs don't need to be more than a few seconds IMO.

Are you asking me? If so, I think Q's imaging is functional. It sets the right tone for the station and sounds decent. Do I think it's among the best I've heard? No.

Music Man, I know from your other posts that you have a great CHR programming mind. You know what sounds right and are sometimes moved by the magic that the CHR format can create. I enjoy reading your comments.

Perfectly said.

Wow. I really, really do appreciate that. Likewise, you always have something interesting and smart to say on the happenings in Atlanta. It's great to be in the company of some cool people here.
