Star 94 listener crashes car while talking to morning show

WXIA has reported for the past couple of days about an 18-year-old 8-month pregnant listener who crashed her car on the interstate while talking to the Morning Mess on her cell phone. The sounds of her crashing were apparently carried live on-air at Star (Video at 11alive.com). She and her unborn baby are fine. The caller later talked to WXIA's Jill Becker and Karyn Greer about the incident (while at home).

Are radio stations going to have to advise listeners to pull over before calling the station? They probably should. Driving and talking on a handheld cell phones do not mix. I am just glad no one was hurt.

Ohhhhh boy. I feel a lawsuit coming on. "They didn't tell me to pull over...they distracted me..."

Well, after listening to the bit where she called back and said how she regretted what she did, it's probably safe to say she's not the suing type.

At least the girl and her baby are OK. Finally, some publicity for the Morning Mess. Not really the kind of publicity that will help boost their ratings, though.

I am surprised you do not hear that more often. The majority of callers probably are driving their cars.

I just saw a billboard on Piedmont Rd.

"Star 94 - Voted the number one station to listen to if you are going to have a wreck while talking on a cell phone."

There are so many things wrong with this story.
18-year-old pregnant girl
Talking and driving
Talking whilst pregnant

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say:
High school dropout
Unemployed
Unmarried
Broken home
Loose parenting

A bit judgmental aren't you? I hope you would have made the same post if, say, a 32 year old soccer mom with a minivan full of screaming kids driving and talking on the phone would of had the same accident.

As for the rest of your post...classless. ::)

Okay, I will admit that one of my goals in radio would be to say something so funny that I could look out the window and see the plumes of smoke rising from auto accidents that I know I caused.

<sigh> Still working on it.

When are we all going to learn to put away the damn cell phones?

The number one cause of accidents? Driver distraction.

Studies have shown that talking on your cell while driving is equivalent to being intoxicated to a degree of about .04

My daughter and her friend were rear-ended 2 days ago by a woman who was.... yup, you guessed it... talking on her cellphone. Everyone is okay, but the lady's car was nearly totalled and she was (rightfully) ticketed.

Hands-free or not makes no difference. A distraction is a distraction, whether it's talking on the phone, juggling a hamburger or as I once saw (I swear this is true) a guy flossing his teeth on I-20 during heavy a.m. rush hour traffic.

Sometimes we're just so stuuuuuuuupid!

This raises the question: which is a worse combination, women driving talking on cell phones or women being able to vote? Discuss...
