STAR 94: NEW IMAGING SOUND

Who's the new guy on some of the newer Star promos and sweepers?

Anybody else notice that they sound slightly hotter in presentation (while still editing the actual music)?

Yes. I was wondering how many imaging voices they're using now. They've been alternating Brian James and Dave Foxx. This week they seem to have added another voice.

From AllAccess today:

LINCOLN FINANCIAL MEDIA Top 40/Mainstream WSTR (STAR 94)/ATLANTA inks voice talents DAVE KAMPEL and ANGI TAYLOR as the primary VOs for the station.

Looks as if Brian James and Dave Foxx are out. Presentation difference is noticeable. Leans younger IMHO.

Whoa! Not entirely surprising given that they have a new Creative Services Director, Danny Wright, so I guess he figured it was time for some tweaking. I personally loved the imaging which featured James and Foxx, but at the same time I think Kampel and Taylor sound great on Star. Very hip and solid.

For those not familiar with Kampel, you might recognize his voice from Z100 in New York, among others.

Music Man, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on Cindy & Ray.

They get higher ratings than Star's morning drive, the station can sneak in more spots due to the makeup of the show, and C&R give the station a platform for making money with tie-ins.

Despite all that, I don't think that's what afternoon drive on a CHR should sound like. (Even though they out-rate mornings, have they driven people from the station as a whole?)

I know they recently signed a multi-year contract so they're not going anywhere soon. And I do think Ray is a talented radio person.

What do you think?

I know I'm not Music Man, but Cindy and Ray have such high ratings because they have no competition. They are the only two-person afternoon show in this market. I agree that Ray is very talented. He'll probably be stolen away after their contract is up.

Truth be told, I haven't heard as much of Cindy & Ray as I have of other aspects of the station (excepting the morning show). What I have heard does seem pretty solid. Personally, I enjoy a bit more music in PM Drive as well, especially in CHR, but Star obviously differs in numerous regard from the traditional model for Top 40 radio so it's not surprising that they might do certain things a bit differently. Assuming the ratings and a capacity for making money are both there, I don't think there's any real reason for Star to tweak what's working.

While we're on the subject of PM Drive on Atlanta CHR's, I'm curious to see what will happen with Q100's opening. I've thought for some time that they could use a hot, entertaining show in the afternoon (think JJ from Z100/NYC, Kane from WFLZ, Kasper from WAKS, among others). There are a few names that I think would fit the bill perfectly, I'm just hoping Q reaches out to someone who will take the daypart to the next level. What do you think?

How many times have we seen this in radio. When a PD doesn't know what to do next he "freshens" the sound by changing image voices and/or adds a new jingle package. Brian James was a distinct and consistant sound. In a world of segues many times the image guy is more recognized that the jock pulling a shift. Why add another change of something familiar jsut when the new morning show starts? Oh, because Z100 is using him so that must be cool. But people in radio love to freshen things. Established image voice change not tied to a format change never makes a big difference. You can smell "nervous" all over 94 right now. I guess that happens when things were going so well, so long.

Brian James was and is absolutely one of the best. But, I believe Star was already using him when I came to Atlanta in 1994. That's a lot of years.

I don't necessarily agree with you that this means Star is nervous. I think Dan Bowen is looking at the change in mornings as an opportunity to freshen up the station. Someone at Star told me his current mantra is "new energy." (In addition to the new morning show and new imaging, Cindy & Ray have new producers.)

I liked the stuff done by Dave Foxx (the most filtered voice in radio) over the past several months, but I think the new imaging unveiled this week sounds good and fits the station really well.

They also got rid of Wendy the traffic gal. She was older and probably didn;t fit the new mode with her motherly approach and her stupid un-named boyfriend.

By the way, has Star dumped the "Always #1 For Today's Hit Music" slogan? It's been edited out of the still-hot top of hour jingle, which, by the way, now features Kampel saying something to the effect of "Star 94 presents the Morning Mess with Marco, Shannon and Superphat Mikey." Granted, Angi Taylor then makes a reference to being "#1 for Atlanta," but the (former?) slogan is not actually sung.

You know what might have been cool? Z100 in NY actually uses Kampel and Kelly Kelly Kelly for much of the imaging between songs (the latter of whom voices some of Q100's imaging), but also features Dave Foxx on some of their promos. I'd love to still hear him (and Brian James also) on the station. Even though I think the new imaging sounds very good, the work with James and Foxx was so solid that it's almost a shame that it's gone.

Interesting Roddy. "New Energy" huh. Sounds as vague as Ford's "Bold Moves." Truthfully changing the image probably be a big deal, just a lot of busy work. Generally in business an established company doesn't what too many changes at once.Loyal customers grow comfortable with familarity. (How many years has WSB AM used Jeff Davis?)Unless format or name change is involved more change, even subtle ones risk throwing listeners out of synch. I suspect WSTR felt an internal loss of "energy" since they were in reruns of S&V 1/3 of the fall book, lost more of their "team" at that time, and fielded thousands of calls of people wondering will life ever be the same. That's a long time to keep people "on hold." Now we've started 08 and a lot feels different. The older and higher income demos are probably exiting Star now. . It's just Star is still for sale. Any change increases risk as they try to attract a buyer.

I still have a sneaking suspicion Cumulus will take another run at them this summer...

I have to admit, Ive been in Atlanta since last Thursday and the station sounds its best in months!

Danny Wright is an imaging guru and the station sounds " TIGHT ". He has really taken the stations sound to a whole new level, and all I have to say is watch out Q100.

The Morning Mess, while I wasnt a huge fan of them in Indy, they do really sound stellar. Its going to truly be a battle of marketing between Bert and Mess. Lincoln Financial has the money and the investors to out-market.

Cheers to Star 94 on making a great station even better!
