Star 94 Playlist

I was just browsing the yes.com databases and happened to come across Star 94's (WSTR) playlist. I was surprised to see very little gaps in time between the playing of certain songs. While for power currents this is more accepted on CHR and maybe Rhythmic stations, I would not expect this on a Hot AC like WSTR. I know they do lean a bit Top 40 (as does our own Hot AC WBMX) but as far as I know they are still Hot AC?

Anyways, For example, according to tonights log, these songs were played this far apart:

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling 22.09.2009 11:58pm
Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling 23.09.2009 1:22am (94 minutes apart)

and

Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody 22.09.2009 11:14pm
Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody 23.09.2009 12:51am (97 minutes apart)

This to me looks like a very thin playlist. I haven't been to Atlanta in a few years, but in the past Star 94 always sounded fresh to me then, and not stale like it seems it has gotten, unfortunately. I'm not trying to diss the station, was just surprised to look at the current playlist and see this, as I have always enjoyed Star 94 in the past. Compared to our Hot AC here in Boston, Mix 104.1 (WBMX) Mix 104.1 seems to have much more variety in their playlist. Even their #1 spin right now, Taylor Swift's "You Belong to Me" has 2.5 hours time between it, which is a bit more and is more appropriate spacing for a Hot AC. When did Star 94 go in such a CHR direction? Is it to compete with the CHR's in Atlanta? It just seems a shame that a heritage like Star has become like this..

Based on the timestamps of those two songs, my guess is that they use a playlist that bypasses Selector once the clock strikes midnight. Maybe they pipe in a satellite-delivered feed? Something similar to Clear Channel's I-Track-Radio, I mean, I-Heart-Radio?

That's pretty liberal compared to some of the tighter CHRs in the country, some of which have turnover times of 45-60 minutes on their hottest currents.

Star is not a Hot AC. They are a Top 40 with a somewhat adult musical lean, and their power turnover times reflect that.

If you think Star 94's music is stale now, I have to wonder if you listened 3-5 years ago. The music is vastly more current nowadays, and the station as a whole sounds revitalized. I'm not saying I wouldn't miss "No Surprise" and "I Gotta Feeling" if they were dropped today, but that's the nature of the format.
