Star 94 Taking the Weekend Off...Again

Star 94 is "taking the weekend off" and playing all party music.

The first time Star "took the weekend off," over Labor Day, the station played 80's songs, and it was a disconnect for me. This time, the theme seems much more appropriate for a CHR station, and the music seems well thought out. It actually sounds really good in my opinion.

I wish they'd play, "I get knocked down..."

Agreed. They're playing a lot of the big 90s CHR hits, not just the Adult leaning one. Perhaps they'll be the station in Atlanta that goes all 90s? The first FM station in the country to execute this format just debuted yesterday in Sacramento

Seriously...a full blown flip to hot AC (80's, 90's, now) might the best move for Star. They can keep Cindy and Ray, Seacreast, and the other DJ's with no problem, as well as the Star name and heritage. For the most part...the change would be invisible (other then the inclusion of older songs).

Or...stay CHR start mixing in rap songs. Going one way or the other can't hurt if the current status quo doesn't work.

And the all-polka station in Atlanta will be WGST.

Roddy, years ago (maybe..25 or so?) on the same frequiency, back when it was 94Q, and prior to Fox 97 being an "oldies station", we/I did a "Good Old Days Weekend" that culminated in a live broadcast at Stooges on Howell Mill Road. The place was PACKED; I mean, no room to move, scary crowded. Every song we played on the air, the audience, and there were hundreds and hundreds in the parking lot, no room to move--they went NUTS. God, it was fun, but I was sweating my fat butt off trying to make them all happy. Loud, crazy, yuppie Atlants, circa 1985 or so...

I heard AC/DC earlier today and thought they switched formats.

Although it was AC/DC the song couldn't end fast enough for me to find out then they played EMF and I had to switch

This is the only time I listen to local radio, is when the holidays happen, especially Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. The rest of the year is back to internet. It just goes to show what people want to hear, now if B98.5 could kill Deliah, and have some sort of special LOCAL programming on Sunday night, maybe a smooth jazz flavors type?????, Common Anne Cox Chambers, you can do it. I mean you have one foot in the grave why dont't you go out with a bang. ???

Sometimes it's good to surprise (read: wake up) the listeners with a special feature and nostalgia provides a positive hook. Every notice how fast an "oh wow" song generates a smile? As late 60's and 70's songs were to the 94Q of the mid-80's - 90's songs for Star are right in context with their listener's high school and college years when life was a party - Shake em up JR!

But would that get them too close to competing with B98.5? Then again, it couldn't be any worse than a flip to soft AC, either.

You would think that B98.5 would have better numbers considering that they have a lock on the "listen while you work" audience since WJZZ flipped. Soft AC would be a better alternative to compete with that, but if the numbers aren't there...

Maybe white-bread hot AC is the way to go.

And the winner is: Dave FM. It's essentially an AC and lately sounding more like a soft AC. Talk is down, even with Mara. Lots of dead seques. Playlist appeals to a better qualitative than passive AC too.

Can't see Star going soft - too expensive to take B98.5 down.

Of course--but I was expecting them to pick up some old WJZZ "environmental"/LWYW listeners. Then again, if WJZZ had listeners worth picking up they (WJZZ) might have stuck around.

Even with as much as we complain about B98.5, anyone would be nuts to mess with their formula.

The last time we got super active in Ariz for the Memorial Day Weekend was back in 2005, when

Mega 104.3/99.3 (rhythmic oldies) mixed all weekend. Guest dj's came in as well. GOOD mixes
Power 92 The Hip Hop Station (rhythmic) mixed all weekend. Guest dj's came in as well. GOOD mixes
104.7 Kiss FM (Top 40) did a party weekend, playing old school and new school hits
Club 95 Latino Vibe (Latin Rhythm) ...well, they were new and already sounded good, so they just stayed the same and it still seemed like a big party with the incredible amount of mixing they did 7 days a week.

Energy 92.7 / 101.1 Arizona's Dance Authority (dance) mixed the house and trance ALL weekend. No off beat mixes.

That was the most we had going all at once, and it was almost as good as how it was done in California back in the late 90's for Labor Day and ALL OF DECEMBER for Christmas! If only this could happen again, with all the stations we NOW have that are rhythmic something! It would be better than when we only had the top 40 station and the hip hop station going at it and trash talking each other about who was harder!
