Star 94's Mark Kanov retiring after 40 years

Retired From Radio said:
Star's billing WAS at the top of the market- key word there. From what i hear from people who still work inside JP/LF, that station bills no where near what it used to, with most of the fall off happening in the last 3 years. "Train Wreck" was the way it was recently descibed to me.

I'm not saying a single station can't make it, I just wouldn't want that assignment.

Star billed $24 million in 2007, down but still one of the top few stations.

down from $30 million just w years earlier- that's -20% in my book.

Leslie Fram where are you. She helped build 99x and q100. Give her a shot but keep her off the air.

tibbs r u bipolar or what. 1 thread u r saying leslie is to blame for 99x dying then here u r saying she should be given this station cuz she did so good with 99x and q100.
in some posts u loved 99x and others u r glad its dead. 99x played good music or they sucked depending on ur post. alternative is dead unless it isnt depending n ur post. only thing u r always consistint on is u love trg and all the oldies they play.
either u work for cumlus or u need some serious meds. or both.

Leslie's faiure with 99x was her insistence of being on the air therefore I said hire her for a non-air position. Loved 99x up until about 2001-02 or so. Then it just flailed about.

Please! This is a tribute trail for Mark. Can we stop with the "L" word for a minute?

Thank you Mark for being such a terrific radio guy first and always. I've never worked for you but know many that have that speak admirably about how much they learned from you. It was always fun to compete with your team and I savored the few small victories.

We work together on a few important projects in the 90's and I always admired your organization and management skills. You brought your game to every project. I hope you will consider stepping into a larger leadership role with a company that needs your vision, experience, and focus. We need you now more that ever before.

A fan.

Do you guys have any idea how many stations would love to own up to billing $24 million

Star and Q are worthy opponents in the Top 40 ratings arena. But in the billing arena, Q must dine at the "kiddie card-table." No offense, but anyone who really knows the A, agrees.

Do your homework kids... and then tell me what "you'd" program if you were the "PD..." Your pride and bonuses would be based on your ... what... "knowledge of the market?" Stop it. Based on your RATINGS.
Being "cool" doesn't pay the HOA dues every month! RATINGS do! Seriously... ATL Radio Revenue is quoted at $410 Million for 2007...??? You don't get to make rash or gut decisions in a market like that!

Either way... you radio-types had better make yourselves more palatable/interesting/compelling to your listeners. Satellite radio is on it's last leg. Don't let up... put your foot on it's perverbial throat!!
