Star 94's Pranks on the 20s

I have been listening to Star 94's Pranks on the 20s.

Does anyone find these funny?

I don't mean to be mean-spirited but these seem more apt for a mid or small sized market rather than one for a Top 10 major market. At least when Q100 did them, they put some thought and time into them. Marco's seem extremely juvenile and put together at the last moment.

Then again I think the Morning Mess is not ready to be in a Top 10 market.

Your thoughts?

Pranks on the 20s is Marco's signature piece and he obviously believes that he's a master of the genre. For whatever that's worth. I see them remaining until management tells him to knock it off.

In other developments, has anyone noticed that the Mess crew now applauds quite frequently when Marco teases the next bit? To me, that has the stink of DESPERATION all over it.

Considering the FCC has clamped down in recent years on putting people on the air without their prior consent, any prank you hear is probably either A) pre-recorded from a long time ago (where there's very little chance of the prankee filing a complaint
or B) completely fake.
In fact, word is that Bert's War of The Roses (a HUGELY popular bit) got tossed because people started asking a lot of questions about its authenticity as everyone was becoming aware there was no way he'd be putting himself at legal risk if they were actual pranks.

With the Morning Mess it's safe to say their "Pranks On The 20's" are either canned from their days in Indy or just plain faked. Either way, I agree that they're lame. Phone pranks are best when they're an occasional treat, not the bulk of your radio diet.

It's interesting that the first comment on Star 94 in two weeks is about something as trivial as this. For all the hype and
massive changes, EVERYBODY's moved on and away from WSTR.

Looks like LF is really missing the Mar-co on Star....Crumy wins, Star has imploded and to give Crumy any kudos is a scary thought.

In general, all this is just more average radio. Has anybody heard anything from Steve McCoy?

And Lincoln has pulled WSTR and WQXI off the table for now...sounds like greed to me. I bet they eventually sell for less than what Cumulus offered them originally.

If Q100 on 99.7 kicks Star's tail, Lincoln will sell out late and low, and the new owner will likely put something new on the station...maybe oldies or alternative. If I were Cox I would tweak the Beat to go after the Star 94 listeners that Cumulus doesn't get. There's blood in the water. The Dickeys could also get in the feeding frenzy with 680, too, and launch an offensive against Zone.

Agreed. Management won't put their collective foot down, which is part of the station's problem right now. The applause is recorded; it's a button they push coming in and out of breaks, and yes, it sounds completely desperate (and lame and small market). They've booked almost zero guests so far. Oh, wait, sorry they did have a phone interview with Monica Pearson from Channel 2. Meanwhile, Q100 had Kelly Clarkson, Matchbox Twenty, and Elliot Yamin (sp?), Ne-Yo, and Nick Lachey in studio in the last week or two. Competition is supposed to make everyone step their game up. It's dissapointing that this is such an easy win for Q.

I'm not here to defend Star 94, but what you're saying isn't true. Last week, they had an interview per hour with people who included Ashlee Simpson, Eva Longoria, Timbaland, Miley Cyrus and others. I heard the ones with Ashlee Simpson and Ryan from One Republic, and they were good.

Yes very true. Your choice:

Q100's Bert Show interviewing Kelly Clarkson:

Star 94's Morning Mess' Super Phat Mikey flooding his nostrils with a Netti Pot:

In fairness to Star, this wasn't airing at the same time as Kelly Clarkson. Just illustrating the extremes.

The Morning Mess. With pranks on the 20s. And yucks on the 5s.

That's clapping? Sounds like a bunch of ping-pong balls. Doesn't sound good either way.

I heard the Netti pot and that was just a horrible gig. But it wasn't as bad as the baby food segment they did (which I heard and tuned out 1 minute into it... that was awful). I just think Star needs to step it up. That clap that welcomes us back to the show every single time gets really redundant really fast. But it doesn't seem like they're trying or they would have done it by now. Q is doing such a great job. Their interviews they had all last week were just A-game for a competition that's now at C level thanks to Star. So it looks like Q is winning this morning competition. It's sad to see Star not stepping it up ... You're absolutely right when you say "Competition is supposed to make everyone step their game up"... unfortunately Star isn't listening.

If its a recorded drop, then they also clap along with it, as you can see in this video: http://www.star94.com/dynamic/video/mysterybox1.wmv

For the record, I thought the netti pot video was hilarious. Not great radio, but I died laughing watching the contrast of Mikey doing it compared to the demo video.

They replayed a bit this morning cause people were 'asking for it in droves.' It was the prank where they called a Pizza place and repeated everything three times.

How hilarious.

Please Marco.... go back to Indianapolis, learn that radio has changed since 1989 and then possibly come back.

Stop the clapping, too; it stinks of pandering and desperation.

If the clapping is a recorded drop (I really can't see myself listening long enough to make a distinction), then they should cut it out ASAP. Message to the listener: We can't even work up enough enthusiasm to do these live. So here's a tape. Enjoy.

Besides not being funny, at the very end the play the same "..to the left, to the left..." drop that Q100 uses. Simply brilliant!!!

HA... I think they're telling everyone to jump to the left from 94.1 to 92.9 Dave FM... I would.

Have you heard the new Dave FM morning show? A jump to the left is like going from really bad radio to really really bad radio.

FROM SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS ...

* The "Pranks on the 20's" are still being recycled from their Indianapolis days ... and they have about a 10 percent "funny" rate ... maybe!

* The "clapping" is live, and has been used since the first time they opened the microphones in January!

* Marco and Mikey aren't acting or creating on-air alter-egos ... they really ARE like that uneducated and untalented! Poor Shannon!

I, for one, would like to hear "Coldcuts on the 20's" featuring Shannon and the nameless slutty intern. And I agree that the Cindy and Ray show could be enhanced by Cindy wearing coldcuts during the show.
Which morning show would play more coldcuts, more often? Who would have the sluttiest intern, playing the most-est coldcuts, on the best-est morning chic?
