Star 98.7 changes.....

transent said:
I think the branding of the station simply as 98-7 and this change being in the middle of the week is a sign that this is just a stunt.
Didn't the book start yesterday?

I agree about the music mix, it's trainwrecking. Beastie Boys and Blink 182 on the sweepers, yet I haven't heard anything by these artists.

Didn't Star do something similar to this before a few years ago? A weekend long stunt or something, back when they started adding lots of 90s gold? I agree with the other poster that an Adult leaning AC rocker with a dose of KROQ gold would be a welcome addition to the dial.

According to allaccess.com, Star 98.7 is here to stay with just another format tweak to differentiate it from sister station - My 104.3.

The airstaff will return on Monday to their regular shifts with the exception of Sean Valentine who moved to My 104.3.

So I guess this it will be Star 98.7 version 3.0 - or allaccess.com is being given disinformation?

I guess we will find out on Monday.

The changes are happening, but more gradually.
Airing a song like "Dear Mr. President" by Pink is fine. So is playing a record like Bush's "Machinehead". Maybe the idea is to go more Top 40/Rock, similar to the old Pirate Radio? Though not quite as extreme.
I'm sure the station wants to hold onto many of its female listeners, while trying to attract some males to the station. So you'll, at least for now, only hear harder Rock records that test well with females and have a big familiarity factor going for them.

With this being the third attempt to fix the format, I'm sure their research shows there's an audience for an adult alternative station, I believe there is. However, I believe the music may be over researched to the point that is so safe, the songs are bonifide hits and good songs, but KROQ has already badly fried most of the 90's and 2000+ product they are playing.

To me, the presentation of the station sounds too packaged and forced also.

I agree, but it's seems to be just a stunt - as mentioned in allaccess.com

What's interesting is that they are mocking KROQ with comments like "we may not be world famous - but we don't have a drug problem yet"...(whatever that last comment means - perhaps some hostility?)

If they are going to stick with the Star branding and simply tweak the format by adding more (FEMALE FRIENDLY) 90's Gold Modern Rock titles, why are they mocking KROQ? Will this new format adjustment really give KROQ competition? Will KROQ lose a significant amount of listeners? Will the they even share a significant audience?

I highly doubt it and it's not because 98-7 sucks and KROQ is awesome or vice versa - it's just a different audience....unless there is a surprise in store for us on Monday.....

I would personally like to see 98-7 become a Modern Rock/AAA hybrid similar to WSWD "The Sound" in Cincinatti or WRFF "Radio 104.5" in Philadelphia and this would definitely not step on sister station My 104.3's toes. I could also see it attracting males and females increasing cume.

That's still the direction I'd like to see it go as well.

Yup, If Thursday's stunt was an attempt by Star to say "Hey guys, we play rock too. Check us out" I don't see it working.

By the way, as we're discussing station's missteps, does anybody else feel as I do about KROQ and the song "Delilah"? It doesn't seem to fit the station. Keep it on Myfm and the current version of Star.

91X in San Diego has been playing that song for months. Belongs on Star and some other hot ac station, not a modern rock station.

It hit #2 on the Alt Chart. Just because it crossed over doesn't mean it has to be blacklisted from Alternative airwaves.

I see that I gave the wrong impression that KROQ is the lone Alt playing it. I really should have said that I thought the song doesn't fit the "format". When I've heard it on other Alt stations (91X. Live 105) I think it sounds just as out of place. Plain White T's are marketed as an Alt band, but this song reminds me of a sappy 70's pop tune.
