STAR 98.7 Possible Flip???

Twinkle Twinkle little star...how I wonder what you are... well..that was liner dropped after the Totally 80's lunch show.

After that...the music on the station varied in quality..from being played at the wrong speed, fading out... even played both versions of Refuge (Tom Petty and Melissa Etheridge's) at the same time...fading in and out. Lara Scott was gone and no sign of Jason and Lisa in the afternoon. At some point it seems its stunting for a flip but still running ads for Jami Jack & Stench....so are they refocusing the format like they did to KBIG a couple months ago? Or are they flipping it to La Presosia(sp)...cuz they have ran a couple of Spanish language commercials along with the normal commercials... very interesting. There is no mention of the staff being jettisoned on All Access... and the website is wack right now.

If it does flip, that will suck for its the only station I really listen to as it plays the mix of music I like...but I know the ratings werent that good in the last book.

Sounds very strange. The website is all screwed up, like you said. Was Joseph Gallant right? Is Spanish coming to 98.7?

Huh? Website looks fine to me, what are ya talkin about?

Mine goes from http://www.star987.com/main.html automatically to:

http://www.star987.com/pages/star789.html

And I just heard that little 'twinkle, twinkle, little star...' thing too.

Maybe it IS a flip, or a major on-air overhaul.

Joseph Gallant might have been right now; the music mix on Star is darker.

Avril Lavigne lyrics: '...it's a damn cold night....'
Melissa Etheridge's REFUGEE
Tracy Chapman's FAST CARS....
Weird liner with two people trying to request songs, end up talking to each other
Then Matchbox's PUSH.

I'm in South Florida, and have read the La Preciosa rumors as well for LA and SD. It's a shame, too for SoCal folks. First a classic rocker, now a Modern/Hot AC.

Still think Ryan Seacreast should've stayed middays after Bonaduce and White in AM Drive. Impending/possible flip maybe a reason for sticking him on KIIS in AM Drive??

Well, lets face it, there's just no room in LA for KIIS, KBIG and Star, one of them had to go.

But I don't think it will be Spanish, because they would not be going about it the way they are. I think it's going to be more of a repositioning, and maybe the first direct competition with Jack in a major market.
But that's just a guess, it could very well be spanish.

Yeah, I listened this evening. Same mix of music, 80s & modern rock/ No jocks, and a phone bit with two young kids asking if they "won the contest"??? Almost sounded like Jack.

Seems like a stunt to get some attention prior to a re-launch... If they were going to flip, CC would've been very public about it - especially if they were going to a Spanish-language format.

> I just heard the twinkle twinkle thing too. Tried to click on Jacks Blog, What's that? Or rather whos Jack? I just heard a listener drop in asking about the absence of the DJ's, sounds like a flip is coming, now they are doing it again. Strange things are happening at Star! The website is messed up and is going nuts!

Heard a Spanish-language PSA in the last stopset, and then it was back into English-language commercials and then Coldplay.

The "crash" SFX preceding the "twinkle twinkle little star" sounds like a direct reference to the numerous "train wreck" references in media coverage of Jack.

And the little music stunts feel like a twisted version of Jack's "intro-teases." (Either that or the board op's union went on strike.)

Sounds like it's just one big mind-f***... especially to those in the radio community who love to speculate.

Will the public get the little inside jokes? Probably not... they'll just wonder what the hell's going on and seek out listening alternatives. If this is their idea of an attention-grabbing stunt, it's not very well thought out. Unless their sole goal is to increase TSL in that ever-important "radio geek" demographic.

Personally, I think it's CC's attempt to get more attention on Radio-Info, and less to Indie and Jack.

(yes, I'm kidding)<P ID="signature">______________

Re: More odd things

They played Gwen Stefani "Rich Girl". The First 15 seconds had "Hollaback Girl" poorly mixed into the beginning of Rich Girl.

A Busy Tone for 5 seconds

A Girl asking is she won anything..

Here's something I'd probably bet: this will last until at least Tuesday. Again, a lot of nothing... for the moment.

Sure... we ALL get diaries, every survey! Right? Right?!?

Well, I'll tell you that I used to like listening to Star 98.7
when they signed on in the early 90's. ( I really enjoyed hearing
Scott Green).
And after Leah Brandon left. ( I loved the totally 80's Friday night
program) the station started to nose dive.
I'd like them to go into a more 80's direction. But if not. So what.
All I can say is whatever direction they decide to venture into. Just
get rid of Jamie White. What a joke to Morning radio.<P ID="signature">______________

Retweaking Star Suggesions

Reposting my fixes suggestions for a re-tweak rather than a junking of Star:

* Have new PD Mike Marino do what he has done - i.e., template Mix 94.1 in Sin City, which he first launched and remains one of LV's top stations to this day. That station is music intensive (after Mark and Mercedes in the Morning), and is aggressively introducing fresh new music, and has a strong street presence, billing itself as the station that is all over town. Star's music is soooooo predictable, especially its recurrents and gold. How often can one listen to Tainted Love - Soft Cell, Better Man - Pearl Jam, Bathwater - No Doubt, Crush - Dave Matthews, Red Red Wine - UB40, etc.?

When a station settles in on such a tight playlist of gold titles, it is indication that the programmers are afraid of alienating their core. Well Star's core is dwindling.

Hopefully, the fact that Mix is an Infinity station and Star is a CC property will be insignificant in terms of allowing Mike to build here what he did so successfully there.

* Dump the morning show - especially Jamie. This market is ripe for the taking with a fresh morning team (I won't say the word "zoo") but if you look at this market, the dynamic morning teams (M&B, K&B) have tapped deep into their creative mills. Let's inject a new top notch team. It's not for naught that I mentioned Mix's M&M in the AM at the top of this post, not that I think we should port them here, but Star should have a similar dynamic in the AM. Their current show is very much out of synch with the rest of the day.

* Shut the jocks up a bit. Don't make them liner card readers, but the station's aura right now is so much chat. Compare to KROQ, who also let their air talent randomly spew comments on anything (heck, I heard Stryker give a long review of his participation in Universal Studio's Fear Factor this week), but the station feels like it is working hard to "get you back to the music faster". Star feels like the music is not what they think you are there for, and you know what, with their unaggressive approach to a playlist, it is not the reason I am there. In fact, in recent years I find myself there less and less, even though I want to be there - cuz a Modern AC / Hot AC can catch fire in this town if done well.

Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)</P>

Listening online, I just heard what was supposedly a conversation between two guys talking about, among other things, how the "new format" "sucks" and is "messed up"...or something like that.

Re: Retweaking Star Suggesions

Let me take this moment to reiterate a point I've been making for years now: it's not about gagging jocks, it's about making what they say relevant to their audience. Two minutes worth of commentary that reflects the interests of the core demo is "relatability"; two minutes worth of natter that only sounds good in the jocks' headphones is just trash.

My98-7?

You know, with Rick Dees off the air still, and Jeff and Jer about to start on sister My941 to the south, I'll be the idea will be to flip the name to My98-7 with the familiar "my 80's, my 90's, my music" theme. And, I know I've suggested this before, but they might even simulcast the Jeff and Jer program from San Diego. Just a guess.

But don't forget, Jeff and Jer used to be on "Star" 100.7, so there could bet some logic (namewise) to this.

So what do you think, could they re-launch as My98-7?

A former Star station here in Fresno used a weekend a few years ago where they declared "Star 101 is dead". They played songs Like "Bye Bye Bye", "Goodnight Goodnight" from any format to make you think they are changing formats. On Monday they had the major announcement that "Star 101 is dead... serious about sending a winner to a U2 concert."

This could be a similar situation with Star 98.7.

Anyone agree??
