Star 98?

I just received the latest edition of The Real Yellow Pages. Looking something up in the R section, I flipped to the Radio Station section. In the radio section and the individual section in the front of the book has 98 listed WSRR Star 98 FM. Also, there is a listing for WOTO-FM/Memphis Oldies. These formats haven't been on for a while. Even 98.1 has changed formats twice. I do not know how many people look up station phone numbers in the phone book, especially request lines. I do know listings in the phone book cost a lot of money. You would think someone would have corrected the listings.

Not to sound cynical (but I do), but that's the only name anybody really knows. It's kinda like when a girl gets married and all her friends call her by her maiden name for the next 30 years. It's probably a good thing.

If it's in the general listing section, they can take ages to update that. They won't do it unless somebody calls them.
However, ifthere are display ads that still refer to "Star 98", I'll bet they don't get paid for it!!!!!

People know 98 by that name because a lot of good people put more time and effort into the station than Barnstable deserved.

Dan Lenzini, Melody Meadows, Earle Augustus, Dana Daniels, Mark Anthony, Cary Pall and Roger ? (PD before Cary) all tried their best but a bad signal and bad management took them out.

Kind of like The Cat.

so whats WHAL & KXHT'S excuse I am sure it's not playing what people want to hear in this market or their signal. Maybe allot of radios are just broke and just stuck on those frequencies. 98.1 has been in a crisis for years. Its 100kw on medium size stick right in the city limits. The station is after a Demo thats chopped up in too many parts already. WRBO has the same power and height basically from much farther away and has numbers.

KHXT & WHAL are both much much lower power and dont cover the entire market but have excellent numbers.

When was the last time 98.1 even did any real advertising and promotion?

Isn't 98's stick in Millington? Or did it used to be?
>

> Isn't 98's stick in Millington? Or did it used to be?

Nah...

It's licensed to Millington, but is on the higher Channel 10 tower (10's site has two towers side-by-side, one tall and one a bit shorter). That's the same tower that Kix, 'RVR, Power 99, and (I think) WQOX are on.

WKNO-FM is next door on the shorter tower.

Between that, a VHF TV transmittter, a UHF TV transmitter, a couple of ham VHF repeaters, and gosh knows what else, there's a bunch of RF out there!

98 has never had RF originating in Millington. They used to be on the Frenchman's Bayou tower in Arkansas a few years ago. The library station is on that now.

Oh...okay. It seems that years ago (when I used to drink and smoke a lot) I applied for a job at a station that was just going talk (cannot remember which format). It seems that the studio was somwhere near millington just off 51.
That was long before I moved to Memphis...and I just can't recall what it was.
Any guesses?

Well, the first thing I see when I step out of my house is a billboard with Drake & Zeke on it.

Frenchmen's Bayou! I knew their signal problems were due to their stick being way out in Arkansas. I would never have come up with the name of the place.

Right down the street where I live in Millington on Bucknell St. off Highway 51 is the studio for what I believe is a Gospel station. Two years ago it was WOOM and now the sign is down. I believe WOOM is in Hickory Hill now and I don't know which station is in there now. The studio in Millington has five small towers in back and a couple of satellite dishes. They are building nice homes beside it. I wish I had enough money to buy the station. It is about three blocks from my house!

Could it be AM 1380? I'd like someone to buy it and put something more interesting than the extreme right wing talk that's on there now.
