Star Ledger Article on WSOU

I don't get it. I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than the metal of whatever that is on WSOU. How can someone who wants to be in radio get a decent aircheck on there? The tape (or mp3) would go right in the garbage. It used to be a great training ground; most of the original Shadow Traffic staff came from WSOU. It also baffles me on how a fairly Catholic university puts that on the air. I'm not saying they have to be "All Mass, All the Time", but something slightly more compatible... even with all the rules they have laid down, it sounds like Satan's living room. Mostly because you can't understand a damn word they're "singing", or more like belching and talking into the microphone.

To each their own I guess.

And WBJB is hardly a "college" station, in the sense of the word. They're like a WFUV south, with a pro staff and NPR programming.

Quite a change in programming since I was there. I remember the University banning "Only the Good Die Young" from Billy Joel, because of the line "Catholic Girls start much too late". I also remember from that time, certain albums being cut with a razor blade so some tunes couldn't be played.
Back then, it was a training ground for radio. Everyone had to do an engineering shift, a news shift, and if you worked at it, you would get a music show once a week.

By any chance, would you be the origin of some of the "No Names, Please" stories in TRI? ::)

Music aside, having been to WSOU I can say it hasn't changed much from Sack's day. Students still have to engineer, then do news, then maybe become a DJ. The emphasis is still on training. Many of the kids go on careers in broadcasting or the music industry. For a student run station, I felt their operation was impressive.

Sorry WNTIRadio, but I didn't realize students weren't involved with WBJB. Has that always been the case?

The students are on the HD3 on WBJB.

If you want to hear impressive all student radio (the GM and the OM are the pros overseeing the operation) try WERS in Boston. AAA format during the weekdays, eclectic stuff at night and weekends.

Nope.
