Stardust/Timeless Favorites Playlist

I realize this is a long shot, but doesn't anyone where do find the library or playlist for Stardust/Timeless favorites before it morphed into what it is now, or can you post some of the "Power cuts" from that playlist? It would be fun to try to recreate those days.

That would be nice.

I remember "You Belong to Me' by Jo Stafford and "A Walk in the Black Forest" by Horst Jankowksi got played a lot. Artie Shaw's "Begin the Beguine" lasted a long time. Someone told me the Hollyridge Strings played "Strawberry Fields Forever" during a lot of commercial breaks. Glenn Miller was all over the place.

Amazingly, I'm hearing a lot of Sinatra and Perry Como songs on Dial Global that I can't ever recall hearing on Stardust.

I saw "The Three Bells" by The Browns mentioned somewhere.

I got an email from Timeless asking me to listen to 600 songs and rate them.

It's not 1 to 10, but like a lot, like some, take it or leave it and dislike. And under each one you can say if you're tired of hearing it. I claim to be not tired of hearing most of the songs that I'm actually tired of hearing so I can reserve the lowest score for the absolute worst songs. That means I say I'm tired of hearing songs that I don't actually dislike (since I checked "Take it or leave it") when I do dislike hearing the song, but when I don't dislike it as much as a really, really bad song.

I don't really do it the way they want, but I give the highest score to the real standards. I should probalby give a lower score to the stuff that doesn't fit. I don't know why I think it will do any good to express my opinions not about how much I like the song, but about its appropriateness for the format. Some songs in my AC fantasy iPod didn't sound so good when i actually tried them.

Among the strange songs I heard were "Maneater" by Hall and Oates, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston, "One of These Nights" and "Witchy Woman" by the Eagles, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler and "Downtown Train" by Rod Stewart. I heard four or five Rod Stewart songs; this morning, of course, on Dial Global I heard the man sing ... okay, I can't remember, but it was a real standard. Actually, "Downtown Train" is not as bad as "My Heart Can't Tell You No" or "Forever Young". I guess I was thinking about those.

"Physical" by Olivia Newton-John though, amazed me. Sure, my local Stardust affiliate played it on the local morning show, but they had evolved into something worse than Timeless Favorites even before there was Timeless Favorites. The Dial Global station also had it once on the morning show. Where is it written that just because it's Olivia Newton-John it even belongs?

Chimp, how did you get the e-mail? Is it a bulk survey? I would love to participate as well. And I'm with you, the standards are always the top tier!

I have the Adult Standards library (and playlist) from (good guess) 1998 around the time Sinatra passed. It's typewritten, so I'll have to scan about 40 pages.

The music on mp3 is the backup for the sat delivered format for one of the radio stations I owned. It was part of the deal I asked for when we got the format.

I went through the emails I got from them. Fortunately, I kept them.

Apparently, I "elected to be a part of our online panel". When I did this, I don't know.

With the demise of the format, it would be nice if someone could post or link to a place that has their playlist. That way it could be recreated. All it takes is a an I-pod on shuffle with the Jingles in place to fire off every once in a while, and you've got it, sans DJs of course.

It's about three years too late for that. ;)

There was one on Yes.com which was used as a source on Wikipedia, but that station went standards again.

I'd still to see a copy of the playlist from the Stardust era.
Me too. That Yes.com sample was obviously far from complete. That's all it could be.

Even better, they used to be more traditional at night. Back in 1990 and even for years after it was leaning more AC and oldies, Stardust would do only standards at night. I listened for several hours when it was on the TV listings channel in my motel room. One of the best songs I heard that night, and one I heard recently on a low-power station which still does real standards part-time, was "Sunrise Serenade" by Frankie Carle. A few years ago the Timeless Classics affiliate had Glenn Miller's version (which I didn't think was quite as good) on the local morning show, which went oldies even before the station gave up the satellite format.

I watched the movie "The Last Picture Show" and they had "You Belong to Me" by Jo Stafford, which was played a lot. Another song sounded like it might have been Jo Stafford, but I didn't know it. It was good. There was another one--I don't know where I heard it--where there was a "Bang Bang Bang" sound repeated a lot. That could have been on "Dr. Demento", but Joe Lacina used to play a funny song each day like "Der Fuehrer's Face". I was lucky enough to be in the car a few times for those.

It amazes me that the teenagers in that movie enjoyed those songs, but more amazing than that was the hick country music they also seemed to like. I mean this was beyond comprehension!

Was the "bang bang bang song, THE THING by Phil Harris??

Sure. Back then, the demograhics were different. The people who were 65 THEN are almost 85, now, and much fewer in number.

PS "Sunrise Serenade" by Frankie Carle is a few years newer than that song by Glenn Miller.

I think "The Thing" by Phil Harris is correct.

The Glenn Miller song was the same one I heard.

The "Last Picture Show" took place in 1950-51.

Music from this movie included Cold, Cold Heart" Written by Hank Williams (as Hank Williams Sr.) Performed by Tony Bennett, "Give Me More, More of Your Kisses" Written by Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price (as R. Price), Jim Beck (as J. Beck) Performed by Lefty Frizzell, "Wish You Were Here" Written by Harold Rome (as H. Rome) Performed by Eddie Fisher, "Slow Poke" written by Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, Chilton Price Performed by Pee Wee King, "Blue Velvet" Written by Bernie Wayne (as B. Wayne), Lee Morris (as L. Morris) Performed by Tony Bennett, "Rose, Rose, I Love You" Written by Wilfrid Thomas (as W. Thomas), Chris Langdon (as C. Langdon) Performed by Frankie Laine,
"You Belong To Me" Written by Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, Chilton Price Performed by Jo Stafford, "A Fool Such As I" Written by Bill Trader (as B. Trader) Performed by Hank Snow, "Please, Mr. Sun"
Written by S. Frank, R. Getzov Performed by Johnnie Ray "Solitaire"
Written by R. Borek, C. Nutter, K. Guion Performed by Tony Bennett. Some of these songs are 'FUDGED" a bit, but the hillbilly spirit of the movie is certainly well represented.

The spirit of the book is captured perfectly; that of the desperation and claustrophobia of small town life, where generation after generation undergo the same rites of passage, living out the same lives of frustration and unrealised dreams. The only time you hear music is when a radio is on or a phonograph is playing in the background.

Why should the realistic "likes of the teenagers surprise you? That's the way things were. Teen music then (especially in small town Texas) would be like that. Eddie Fisher and Jo Stafford and Hank and Hank Snow and Johnny Ray were what Miley Cyrus is today!

Hardly.

Has anyone seen that photo of Miley that took up a whole page in some newspapers? They sell her dresses in one of the departent stores. She's wearing one so short it's scandalous. And her fans are mostly kids, right? Their parents would never allow it.

Now I didn't mind looking at her in that dress ...

Chimp,

In the 50's, THAT IS the way things were. Have you never seen, "Rebel Without a Cause? I'm talking about :last Picture Show."

Not sure how you got the subject of Miley, except that shis today's hot star as those people I named (below) were the pop superstas of the 50's.

Rebellious. If my folks like it, I don't...and vice versa.

Now "Rebel without a Cause" is more like it. There were rock and roll stars even back then. I suppose radio didn't play them and in that small town it would have been hard to find the records.

On "The Waltons" it was Benny Goodman the parents had a problem with. That would have made more sense.

Anyway, what they were listening to was the good stuff.

The "bigger city" stations played "rock" of the day. A few cities had "race" (black) stations.

Many had hour or 2 hour programs in the latter part of the afternoon or early evening to play the contemporary artists while still having the rest of the day to play Sarah Vaughan, Sinatra and the "adult" music.

As "Joe Buck" stated in Midnight Cowboy... "hell I'm brand-spankin' new in this town"... which brings me to adding a few words on this subject.

I recall during many a station break, they (Timeless) used to play the Airport "love theme" which I found to be a real "groovy" kinda re-mix. I would've loved to have gotten my hands on a copy of that. They also turned me on to the "Disadvantages of You" (the old 70's cigarette ad). So much so, that I found the original LP (album title of the same name) with the song on it at a local record shop. I'm now damned proud to own it!

I'm kinda sorry they'll be gone soon. But what they have now is a sort of ghostly shadow of their former selves. About a year ago this area lost our main "Timeless" station when they went "silent" (on 930 AM). Now it's online streaming at work, from 102.7 "The Lake" (which actually THINKS they're a Canadian station (since the studios are in Kingston, Ontario) or a fuzzy signal on my kitchen radio from 1270 AM about 70 miles away!

By the way.... does ANYONE know what happened to Scott Reese????
