Starguide III LNB voltage gone

I got a short in my coax and lost the DC 24 volts for the LNB. I am supplying it externally with a couple of wall warts in series, but would like to fix the box. Tech support says they can't (I think they mean won't) tell me anything about it. I suspect it's the Linear Tech LT1172 regulator supplying LNB voltage. Can anyone confirm where this voltage is coming from and what I should check? Thanks for reading and hope you can help me.

What network are you using it for? I know ABC tech has been really good with us on helping out for repairs.

We're using ABC, too. They didn't know about the inside of the box at the # I called. I don't have the number with me but it was in NY and I think the last 4 digits were 5000. Tech support was option 4 when I dialed the main #. Do you have the # you called? Thanks for helping.

Had a bad splitter smoke a surface mount inductor and resistor in a couple SG's LNB power sources.
Best thing to do is to use an external supply.

I had the same problem after a lightning pop. I think I found a 10 ohm .25 or .5 watt resistor open. I can't remember where on the circuit board it was located but I think it was near the coax connection.
Take a voltmeter and if you can find any low value resistors in that area read the voltage on both sides of them. I think I had about 20 volts on one side and 0 on the other. Good luck. If I get a chance I will pull the Starguide out of the rack and see where this part is located or if it has a Rxx number on the board.

That's it - sheez - they have always helped me out. Sorry for the problem.

I know at one station that I used to work for we used an external power supply ........ we had several Starguide receivers being fed from the same dish. We used DC Blocks and splitters that we got from Dawn Satellite. Don't know their number anymore but they were a good supplier for satellite stuff. Good luck.

Hey, thanks for checking. Like I said earlier, I am putting in the LNB voltage externally with a splitter (Drake, I think) with DC blocking. Ditto on the Dawn Satellite comment, I have been pleased with them, too. Don't think I'm going to mess around with that itsy bitsy surface mount stuff. I could easily make it worse. I'm going to quit while it is still working. Thanks to all who responded for your advice.
