Starkville CBS station knocked off the air before Auburn-MSU game

Talk about bad timing. On the eve of the biggest game in Mississippi State history, a lightning strike has knocked the CBS affiliate serving Starkville, Miss., off the air. The game between No. 2 Auburn and No. 3 Mississippi State is being shown nationally on CBS.

Just curious, but is that WCBI?

Our local CBS affiliate, WRAL, didn't carry the Georgia-Missouri game unless they put it on their subchannel 5.2; they're contractually obligated to carry the ACC game of the week, which was Duke-Georgia Tech. I'm lucky that I had three other stations to watch a game that not only involved my alma mater (Georgia) but had SEC East championship implications, because the game was carried on Greensboro's WFMY as well as WCBS and KCBS. (And Georgia seemed to do just fine without Todd Gurley, winning 34-0 and opening the possibility that the Kentucky game may decide the SEC East.)

But your game (which was carried as the second half of CBS's doubleheader) really did have implications in the SEC West, what with Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State bunched up going in today. I hope your affiliate came back on.

Yep, that station was WCBI (Columbus MS). They gave cable and satellite providers the okay to tap into nearby CBS stations until they got their signal back on.

I was at the game yesterday, and was curious why TV's in the concourse carried the feed from WMDN-24 in Meridian. Now I know why.
