Starmate Replay Remote Control Issues

I have my Starmate Replay mounted in the left corner of my windshield and have mastered using a remote control with my left hand. However, the remote itself just doesn't seem to work very well, I've changed the battery and adjusted the line of site between the remote and the receiver (the IR on the Starmate is in the top left corner by the Power button.) The remote just doesn't work consistently. Has any one else experienced problems with the Starmate Replay and its Remote Control? Are their any alternatives?
 
SECOND THAT....

It works randomly. Even with the remote 4 inches away from the unit. whats the deal? Thank god for the memory buttons or I'd have wrecked my car by now.
 
I usually use remote with my hand in the center console 2 maybe 2.5 feet away no problem. Well few problem. Every now and then it does not respond. And it does not work at all if I have my hand up on the passenger seat back a distance of 3.5 to 4 feet.
