Stars 97.3 Totally Unoriginal

What's the point of having two stations in the same town doing an 80s weekend? Stars 97.3 is even using the same name for their 80s weekend as Mix 100.3 -- Totally 80s.

This is perhaps the craziest thing I've ever heard. It's one thing to steal an idea -- but to also use the same name? Are the 80s really this popular?! Ugh.

???

No, I don't think that's what it is...

This is (as I suspected) the begining of Stars going in a more Hot AC/CHR'sh direction. So where do you start? You start by going up against the competition. It's like saying "Hey, 2 can play at this game!"

I see your point about "unoriginal," but I disagree. I think it's genious! Lubbock is still a diary town, and what better way to confuse the audience, eh? Doing a totally 80's weekend, is no more unoriginal than two station competing for the same format.

Either way, it is a interesting development, yes?

why not? what's to lose. i think it fits Stars better than Mix(who did it first). it could be a nice niche format for somebody.

I have also noticed that the Stars playlist seems to be evolving from mainstream AC to a hotter AC direction. Having Ryan Seacrest gives it a more CHR personality to balance out John Tesh and Delilah.

With Jack now gone (which played a healthy dose of 80s), Stars is trying to get a further piece of the 80s pie. In the long run, 80s weekend might work better on Stars over Mix. With Mix 100, how much longer can a Hot AC (that leans CHR) get away with playing all 80s when we go beyond 2010?

For an all 80s weekends to work on Stars, they need to only play syndicated shows that have 80's. This 3 day weekend, it was "All 80's (until John Tesh and Delilah are on)." So every night at 7, the 80's would stop. That is disorganized. Meanwhile, Mix had a true all 80's weekend.

As for Stars going Hot AC, they will not make any dent against KMMX so long as they are also playing John Tesh. John Tesh's show is a stopper, it brings the whole station down. He does not have any DJ skills, and his talk breaks amount to nothing more than advice that nobody asked for. Why are we listening to Reader's Digest Radio on a Hot AC station? It is the wrong thing for that station, they need a live shift instead.

Having as many syndicated shows as they have on Stars is hurting the station. Ryan Seacrest alone is okay, Delilah alone is okay. But if you are going to fill an entire music FM station lineup with syndicated shows, you are cheating the listener, because now you have not done anything special, and you don't have a radio station. What makes Stars different from any other frequency that has Ryan Seacrest, John Tesh and Delilah? NOTHING, because anyone can do that. If they are going to do that, it would be better for them to just use a satellite network. You can't program a music station the way you program a talk station. They won't beat KMMX this way, nor should they deserve to.

i think they will become a "Radio Station" when they, put a LIVE person on the air(there's NO-ONE HOME) in afternoon drive!!(or weekends) and they need a morning show, IF they're going to compete on any level. the 80's weekend sounded pretty good, who knows, that could get them somewhere during the week too.
