stars who can't stand their own shows

Tina Louise ( Gilligans Island ) and Jay North ( Dennis The Menace ) are classic examples of this even though I heard recently that both have somewhat changed their opinions in recent years as far as stars who can't stand the sight of their own shows goes.

But I was surprised to read elsewhere that among Bewitched's least favorite fans was...Elizabeth Montgomery !! The star of Bewitched !! Dittos with Linda Lavin ( Alice ) though I question that one. In some interviews I read about Lavin I got the impression she really liked the show.

My cousin says that Nancy McKeon hates The Facts of Life even though she played JO on that show for many years. Sally Field is a big foe of The Flying Nun, wonder what her thoughts are in reguards to Gidget or that odd TV-movie she did in the early 70s "Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring"?

any other examples of this?

A bit off thread, here, but this situation is remindful of a beer distributor who drank only hard liquor. Of beer he said, "That stuff is made to SELL."

George Reeves not only despised TV, feeling it was beneath a movie actor to appear on television, but he also blamed "Superman" for preventing him from getting more serious roles.

As an example, his part in the movie “From Here to Eternity” was scaled down because during a special preview of the movie people in the audience starting yelling "There's Superman" when he appeared on screen.

Before his death in 1959 he only made one more movie. A low budget Disney picture "Westward Ho, the Wagons" which starred Fess Parker. Reeves used a fake mustache and beard to disguise his appearance because he didn’t want the audience to recognize him as Superman.

For years William Shater played down his role of Capt. James T. Kirk on Star Trek .He refused to attend Star Trek conventions and even made fun of "Trekies". That is until he finally realized the show made him into a recognized celebrity and the Star Trek movies came along, putting millions into his bank account.

Robert Reed hated his role on the Brady Bunch as Mike Brady.

There's an ongoing rumor/urban legend that Tom Hanks tried to buy the rights to Bosom Buddies from Paramount so that it would never be seen on TV again.

Didn't know Elizabeth Montgomery felt that way about "Bewitched"..."Pop Up Brady" on VH1 announced to the world, though, that Reed was the only BB castmember who was afraid to do the coasters at Kings Island ; ))
Edward R. Murrow hated "Person To Person", but had to suck it up and do it in order to do "See It Now", "Harvest Of Shame", and other stuff.
Before "Full House" and "Funniest Home Videos", Bob Saget was primarily known as
a foul-mouthed stand-up comic, and now he does non-family stuff like "Half-Baked" and guests on Howard Stern..."So he must have hated the kiddie shows?" "That's what I'm saying."

Unless the movie "Man On The Moon" was wildly inaccurate, Andy Kaufman despised "Taxi" from the start.

Tina Louise was ticked because she wanted to be the star of the show. She had suggested the program be called “Ginger’s Island".
Both Jay North and Patty Duke were tormented as children and forced into working on TV. Both of them were just meal tickets for others.
John Amos of “Good Times” quit that show (some say) because he got tired of Jimmy Walker's character of "JJ". He felt “JJ” was acting like a 1970’s version of “Steppin Fetchit”.

And in keeping with the game show theme, once Richard Dawson's popularity skyrocketed as host of Family Feud, he wanted to get out of his panelist role on Match Game.

I heard this !!

I wonder if stories such as these are one reason why many of the made for TV films from the 70s aren't seen today, not even available on DVD ?

For example in the 1974 TV movie "Pray For the Wildcats", I believe there is a scene showing Andy Griffith and Robert Reed smoking pot. The late Robert Reed I am sure could have cared less, but Griffith, I can see him owning the rights to the movie so viewers of today won't see "Sheriff Andy Taylor" smoking a joint.

On a similar note, a few years back I heard on the radio that most of the cast of Friends, not only hated the show but that most of them don't even own a television set!!

I think it was Lisa Kudrow who said "...just because I make my living from the boob tube doesn't mean I watch it".

they did not whittle down Reeves' on-screen time, but I've heard
the same story you post here. Producers pay attention to preview
audiences' reactions (more often than not, I hope), and I'm
inclined to believe Reeves' part was indeed scaled down.

Reed was appearing simultaneously on "The Brady Bunch" and roughly
every other week on "Mannix" as Mannix's friend on the LAPD, Lt. Adam
Tobias. Once when Reed was a celebrity guest on "Password," Allen Ludden
reminded viewers to watch Reed on "The Brady Bunch," and Reed reminded
Ludden that he was also on "Mannix." Reed made no bones about the fact
that he preferred doing "Mannix."
