Static 98.3

I was thinking, since a good percentage of their playlist is Gold, would that alter their classification with the format they get listed as? For example, "90.7 The Goldmine" was considered "Classic Hits" in the beginning, because they were being monitored while their ratio was less currents. But Steve adjusted that so they can now be classified CHR.

So since KKFR plays less currents then ever before, would that change how they get monitored?

KKFR? I keep forgetting that it exists...a sad shadow of what it once was.

Trust me, I'm the same way. The only reason I'm aware of their rotations is because I looked it up online. No way I could sit through all that nonsense. Here they call themselves "Where Hip Hop Lives" again, but its mostly stuff from either last year or even before that? Does that mean Hip Hop is now like Disco? Or does that mean they ignore currents? Kanye has new material, but they rotate Golddigger, or Heartless instead. Granted Kanye sucks, but he IS hip hop right? Yet LMFAO or Pitbull are in HEAVY rotation, which are more Pop in my opinion.

"Static 98.3" had a 4 share today ... which was higher than KMLE, KNIX, KUPD, KYOT, and oh 92.3

I suppose it's possible on the west side, but that isn't really relavant to the topic.

The station is consistently at or around a 3.0 share ... which beats a number of South Mountain stations ... Power has been on a pretty steady uptick in its target demos for most of two years.

I believe one of the main reasons for Power's recent increase in ratings is the resurgence of new (quality) hip hop and r&b (which some urban/rhythmic hip hop fanatics are discussing in the chr/rhythmic/hip-hop section http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=193179.0) in addition to some other pop musical evolution factors.

I'm not sure how long this resurgence and new wave of hip hop / rap is going to last, but right now it's apparent that dedicated hip hop and r&b artists are trying to get serious and make a change instead of just continuing to talk about how bad things have gotten without putting in any effort to change it.

I believe another thing that is somewhat contributing to this resurgence of hip hop & r&b is the fact that some rhythmic artists have gone so far pop and electro (example; Lady Gaga doing things like "edge of glory", etc.) that certain rhythmics had to decide whether they want to go that direction with their sound or drop certain artists and stick with their hip hop lean. Many have chosen to fully drop Lady Gaga and similar things (even their recurrents) and take advantage of / fill those slots with the new crossover r&b hip hop hits and drop the heavy hip hop recurrents play a bit. I'm here in L.A. and see that some of the talk that I've seen in the chr/rhythmic/hip-hop section is true; Power 106 has dropped Lady Gaga and other similar things from main playlist and started to (slightly) focus more on the new hip hop sound. I've noticed that Power 98.3 Phoenix has pretty much done the same thing.

With the resurgence in mainstream hip hop and r&b hits, I believe Power 98.3 will benefit and have longer and better success than previously predicted because they are pretty much the only ones fulfilling a dedication specifically towards that sound. I guess 101.5 JamZ could shift back to a more urban lean, but... in some ways, testing that sound wouldn't exactly make much sense, due to the fact that they (already know that they) are doing well with the format style they have NOW. The best bet is to keep things the way they currently are, with KZZP, KZON, and KKFR sticking to their current sounds since it is all working for them at the moment and they are all fulfilling a purpose.

As long as people continue to release new hits like this:

Dj Khaled - I'm on one
YC - Racks
Trey Songz - unusual
Lupe Fiasco - My Head
Chris Brown - She ain't you
Big Sean - My last
Wiz Khalifa - Roll up
Chris Brown - Look at me now
Tyga - far away
Jeremih - down on me
Nicki Minaj - Super bass
Lil Wayne - How to love
Waka Flocka Flame - No hands
Kreayshawn - Gucci gucci
Lupe Fiasco - Show goes on
Bad Meets Evil - Lighters

And other "back up quality material" mixed with "urban influenced rhythmic melodic hits" that people will love:

Frank Ocean - Novacane
LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
Kelly Rowland - Motivation
Pitbull, Ne-yo - Give me everything
T-Pain & Chris Brown - Best love song
Kanye West - All of the lights

stations with the KPWR / KKFR / to even the WQHT.. etc. type formats will most likely continue to successfully keep their place in a (major) market. In addition to all that, it's possible that some rhythmics and non chr pop leaner rhythmic stations that once fell in ratings due to a new trend sound are now somewhat being helped as people "look for a temporary escape" from the current, heavily played chr sound.

I'm old school... I like that new Jay Z/ Kanye collaboration: Otis. This reminds me of original hip-hop..Gotta...Gottta.. ;D The power 98.3 played it first!!

KDM, Those 20 songs you named are the only currents they play. If you look at their chart, the other 80 are old. My whole point in this topic is not about ratings. Its not about them being true to the format or not. It's about their lack of currents. Is this where hip hop is headed? Into an all gold format? Because even their currents are dated and questionable as Urban (Rocketeer, LMFAO, Rihanna). I mean...look at this washed up list:

http://www.yes.com/#KKFR?chart

My original question is, how does a station remain being monitored as "Rhythmic CHR," when their ratio is NOT majority currents?

BTW, as far as their ratings being called "steady at a 3 share," I recall them dipping into the middle 2's recently. I realize this board only shows 12+ (or is it 6?), but I do believe thats who they target...a bunch of kids on the west side.

Yes, most stations play 20-25 currents ... so that number is about right.

You're not looking at current percentage

All I am trying to point out is, How can they be "Hip Hop," when they play more dated stuff than currents? Does BET play stuff from 2 years ago? What about MTV2? Sucka Free Countdown? Is Black and Yellow still on there??

Here are the charts for 2 CHR stations. They play WAY more currents then KKFR. Granted formats are different, but I see more than 20 in the 100. Looks like KKFR should pay attention to actual Hip Hop charts instead of only playing what works for them from the CHR world.

Let it be known that I don't care for Today's Hip Hop, but if you're going to brand yourself as that, then you should be playing something like this

http://www.yes.com/#WHTA?chart

There is no LMFAO, Pitbull, or Far East Movement on this list. WHTA owns the format, as opposed to being soft about it. Does KKFR think "hip hop" is still a buzz word, and they can trick their listeners by pretending to be it? I already know the argument. This is not ATL and what works over there won't work in PHX. My answer? Don't call it Hip Hop then.

You should hear Power 106 in L.A.! They are currently more dancier than Power 98.3, and Power 106 has recently reduced the dance content! Even WQHT is listed as rhythmic and they are famous for being the nations leading & most known hip hop station.

All of those (Dev, Guetta, Afrojack, and Alexandre Stan) are heavily played in L.A.! KIIS, KAMP, KGGI, and even KXOL plays them a lot (although Afrojack isn't played on all of those stations, but is in high rotation on KIIS and KAMP).

Pitbull ft Ne-yo seems to be the thing I hear most often in L.A., in addition to LMFAO (and the high rotation of "boomerang" by Dj Felli Fel on Power 106). The Pitbull ft Ne-yo with LMFAO and Dj Felli Fel being played a lot thing reminds me of Tucson's Hot 98.3.
