Station Audio Processing

Not sure if anyone else here pays attention to the processing stations use.. but i've noticed a reversal: WFNX sounds MUCH cleaner than it used to.. i'm enjoying the processing on it today.

Meanwhile, Kiss 108 used to have the most awesome processing - now it sounds all muddy and "pumpy".

Used to be the other way around..

Both stations just got new engineers.

It's not solely the responsibility of the engineer, is it? Isn't there some guidance from the PD and/or programming executive?

The new processing on 104.1 "Mix 104.1" really annoys me, painful to listen to when loud. I didn't find the processing as annoying when it was on 98.5 for some reason.

I used to find FNX's processing not as "clear" and squeaky clean sounding as some of the other stations, but I have noticed an improvement as well.

PD's definately have a say in the audio processing, say it's a Hip-Hop station with one of those "The Beat" monikers, the bass will be cranked up.

My opinion: Mix 104.1 is the worst sounding station on the dial processing-wise. I heard when they switched from WBCN's excellent Omnia setting to the horrible current setting, it was depressing. Listening to Mix is fatiguing and annoying - i cannot comprehend how any programmer or engineer thinks that squashing the audio will win more listeners. It's not any "louder", nothing is gained by smashing up the music you play. Do they research this stuff?

No idea whose decision it was to alter the settings on WFNX and Kiss108, but the fact that new engineers are in place at both stations leads me to believe they're the factors that led to the switch - very good in WFNX's case - bad in Kiss108's place.

WFNX is clearly changed - Kiss 108's is more subtle for the worse = i think they're trying to make the station more bass heavy. Hence the mud.

You are completely right about FNX's processing - I'm listening on a HK AVR 146 tuner and the difference is night and day. Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is on right now, and the drums sound snappy, dynamic and clear, not muddy and distorted like they would have sounded a few weeks ago. Kudos to the engineer for making a good choice in the sound. Kiss 108 and Mix 104.1 do sound terrible, btw.

Also, WODS's bass is distorted.

The density is too "in your face"

WROR has been consistently good over the years.

Just my $.02.
