station by station operations--indy non comms

Since we're going station by station, I thought maybe we could spend some time on Indy's non commercial stations (excluding the high school stations, as many of them are dark or heavily automated right now. It seems the main players are 90.1 WFYI and 88.7 WICR. Both of these stations brand themselves as public stations, but program themselves differently as FYI is an NPR affiliate and ICR relies more on Jazz and Classical music as well as some local talk programming. Also, if anyone wants to throw in some thoughts on some of the outer lying non comms (ie 88.1, 90.5, 89.1), feel free, it will only improve the discussion. These stations while not competing with the big boys, get suprisingly good numbers in some key demos. Thoughts on any of these non commercial stations???

I listened to WBST (92.1 Muncie, WBSB 89.5 Anderson) for a while, because Stan Sollars was my sound teacher. He's got a pretty good voice. Otherwise, non-coms don't really keep my interest.

Now that I'm doing atfernoons, I don't get to hear him as much, but I think Tom Woody with his rich voice, deep knowledge of the music and perfect pronunciation is the absolute best at what he does on WICR.

WICR and WFYI are terrific, but I'd give the advantage to WICR. Scott Uecker runs a tight ship over there and their facilities are terrific.

As far a Non Comms operated by schools the Indiana State Board of Accounts indicates all their license renewals are invalid as the school boards were not involved in their renewals. Essentially contracts negotiated without approval of elected officials. A felony in Indiana. No school official signed the renewals.

88.1 was doing so well in key demos that Indy Lico copied song for song their music as "The Song". Current station promotion ala Letterman is giving away hams.

Didn't hurt that Ch 6 has a weak signal and a large percentage picks them up on Tv's. Really neat to see Martha Weaver or Paul Poteet lipsync music..

89.1 WSPM (William Shirk Poor Man)is doing well serving the Catholic populace as Catholic Radio.

90.5 WIKL (Formerly WSPV) has a large audience as Indy's K - Love.

90.7 WKPW is the only school station where students make the decisions and get to implement them. operated by the Soldiers and Saliors home students program, have live on air shifts unlike voice tracked or liner run stations.

I assist in instructing students at a local high school run station that has live students every weekday 7:30a-3p with voicetracking in non-live dayparts. We have community/educational programming every morning. Students help program, implement and promote every aspect of our station. Since this IS a learning eviroment, we don't sound perfect...but pretty damn good if you ask me!

How'd you get the gig? Is it a volunteer thing? Sounds like a hoot.

It's real fun...especially when you have the students that really try hard and get it! I saw the gig posted on indianabroadcasters.org one day, and applied for it quickly. I now have been here for almost a year.
