Station imaging guidelines

How often do you change up your imaging? And I'm talking about just regular station imaging...not special events/promotions...What's the norm for updating liners and such?

Thanks in advance!

I always treated imaging like music, scheduling the equivelant of golds, powers, new, recurrents, etc. Some 'heritage' pieces that were always in rotation, but low. Fairly new stuff that sounded great that was very heavy, I'd drop some for a few months and then bring them back, but always a few updates every week or two. It was easier than it sounds, I just kept track of how songs burned and assumed the imaging would burn in a similar fashion. If I introduced a new piece at the same time as a song, I'd keep an eye on the song. When everyone was sick of the song, I'd assume they'd be sick of the sweeper too. IMO, it kept the whole station cohesive. I'd try to keep about 200-300 active elements at all times.

I have worked places where the imaging hasn't changed since the format flipped two years prior. I have heard stations that give the legal ID between every song and that's it.

Most recently, I've been working with an ABC Music Radio format, which allows me to submit 50 liners every quarter. I usually submit 45 or so (so I have wiggle room in the event of an "imaging emergency"), and choose about ten to fifteen from every jock and twenty to twenty-five from the network station voice. I produce the station voice liners, and mostly leave the jock liners dry. All the liners are day-parted and jock-matched.

I'll run about twenty of the liners I've selected at any given moment, and switch them out with the others that I have on hand every month or so. There are some that run continuously, and some that may last for only a month.

What stations run nothing but a legal ID between songs?

As for my answer to the questions.. I just change things up or switch things out whenever my gut tells me they are getting overplayed and old.....sometimes I do nothing more then re-record a liner with slightly new production music and slight rewording..... other times I completely rework the music and completely different music.

I go more with gut and what feels right.. then some set schedule.

The station I was referring to was WEZG in Morganfield, KY. It was silent for some time, then came back with an automated AC format. Now doing K-Love.

Ah Ok.

I've even gone so far as to freshen up the legal id..... changing out some cities after the call letters and city of license..... slogan, etc.

Much like Emmett I assume, I used my music scheduling software (Musicmaster and then Selector) to keep track of my imaging pieces and scheduled them as if they were music so I could keep a record on the number of plays, rest them etc. Sure it takes a little bit to set up but it's well worth it.

Try this...

T - Type

S - Style

L - Length

when scheduling promos, positioners, jingles, bits, etc.

Create clocks for your imaging...multiple clocks at that to keep the hours fresh.

I try and change mine out every month, with certain formats though you have to be a lot more on top of it
CHR/Alternative stations are constantly topical and that requires a more diligent outlook on cycling your elements. I too like Emmett have anywhere from 300-400 elements on hand at all times. Seasonal imaging is a different animal all together. Right now I'm in Holiday mode so I am constantly working on keeping White Christmas as fresh as I can.
Hope that helped

I'm a fan of burning imaging for 4 weeks, then changing it out. All imaging changes out 1x per month, but I change 25% of it each week, so there is always stuff coming in and out.
