Station KNBC

In all their new local promos and legal ID bumpers, that's how they legally identify themselves:

Station KNBC, Los Angeles

Yes, I know as long as there's nothing between the calls and COL, it's perfectly legal.

But any reason why it's "Station KNBC?"

Is this a new NBC thing?

Not necessarily hip. More like there is no real Channel 4 any more since the DTV transition. So maybe they are just making the break early away from a Channel 4 ID and toward a more generic Station ID. Personally I am not impressed.

KNTV In San Jose/San Francisco has been branding as "NBC Bay Area" for awhile now - the dial position is never mentioned. You only see the call letters at the bottom of the screen at the top of the hour ID. I understand that some NBC O&Os and affiliates are doing this in other markets as well.
