Station Logos That Remain The Same

WSAZ Huntington has used the same logo since the seventies, maybe longer. WPVI Philadelphia is another that comes to mind, of course the news theme has been used just as long. Any other stations that have used the same logo for years?

I can think of some..

*Baltimore's WJZ-TV, same logo since 1963 perhaps 1962.

*Denver's KUSA's "9 News" logo I know has been in use since the mid 70's when they were KBTV. Really the only thing that has changed is the addition of the NBC logo beside "9 News".

*Buffalo's WKBW had used the same circle 7 logo from the 70's until shortly after that 2004 Jim Carrey movie which featured WKBW "Bruce Almighty". Today WKBW still uses that circle 7 but it has since been "somewhat" updated.

I believe Pittsburgh's WTAE the style of their 4 logo ( just the 4 ) has been in use since the early 80's if not earlier.

WKBW has had three very distinct logos in the last 30+ years, and while they're all some form of "circle 7," they've varied considerably in design.

WCVB's 5 has been the same since day one back in 1972. Easily the oldest logo still in use in New England, and probably one of the oldest in the country by now outside of the original ABC circle-7s.

WJET in Erie has to be at or near the 30 year mark with its "24."

KCRA in Sacramento, which has a similar squared-off "3" to WSAZ, is probably pushing the 40-year mark with its logo, too. Down the road in Oakland, KTVU has had its "2" for an awfully long time, too.

WJZ-TV uses the "Group W" Logo that most Westinghouse stations used for years. The earliest I've seen it was 1963 at KYW-3, then in Cleveland, based on Cleveland area TV Guide ads of the period..Assuming of course, that all the Westinghouse logos changed at that time..after KYW returned to Philly in June 1965, they kept the same logo into the year 2003..

KTVK in Phoenix has used its white-on-red "3-ball" since the early 80s...with minor variations (the 3 in a squiggly TV, the 3 with a Nike-like swoosh, and currently the 3 in an orangish HD picture tube.)

And the ABC-owned channel 7 stations have used the "circle-7" since 1962-the same year the abc circle was born.

WTAE's 4 logo was introduced in 1973.

Speaking of Hearst stations besides WCVB and WTAE, WISN-12/Milwaukee has been in use since 1976.

KING TV In Seattle has been using
the crown 5 logo since the 70's
there was a short period in the 80's
that they didn't use it, but went back to
it

I believe KLTV in Tyler has used the Circle 7 since about 1980 or so. I recall seeing an old TV Guide from late 1980 in which KLTV was using the Circle 7 around that time.

I guess we can add the "Circle 7" for ABC O&O's - distinctly different from WKBW's.

KTLA just recently went back to their old "5" logo, which was in use from the very early 80s until the late 90s. In fact, the old "5" still remains stationed in front its studios in Hollywood, even including through a few logo/branding changes.

Add KPIX-5 San Francisco to the list of stations that still use the Westinghouse/Group W font for their channel number branding.

WBBM-TV has used their CBS eye logo, along with the number 2 next to it on and off since the 70's (maybe longer than that). As many have mentioned, WLS-TV is one of the ABC O&O stations that uses the circle 7. I don't know if other ABC O&O stations with the circle 7 have the ABC logo to the left of it. They've been using that along side the circle 7 since the 90's. That's the only modification with WLS-TV.

PBS station WYCC has used the same logo for 10 or more years (no more than 26 years, as they've only been on the air since 1983). The only difference is that they now refer to themselves as Wise TV, with the WYCC call letters & original channel 20 along side the call letters. They added 21DT next to 20. Other than 21DT & wise tv along side the call letters, the WYCC 20 logo has stayed the same.

I believe WCIU has used the same logo since it went to English language programming on January 1, 1995.

I believe that's all I'm aware of for Chicago for stations that have used their logos for several years. I can't find any logos for WTTW. Channels 38, 60, & 66 have changed a couple of times with call letters along with network affiliation. WFLD 32 (DT-31)doesn't use their call letters & channel # except for station identification (not channel number though), and ID as Fox Chicago. 44 mainly ID's as Telemundo Chicago, and WPWR has changed their logo several times over the years, along with channel# in 1987.

...WBAY-TV/2 Green Bay's "circle2" has been in use there in one variant or another for most of the last 35 years...

Not quite correct. The "5" that KPIX uses now (and has used for the last decade or so) is not the original Group W "5". It's somewhat similar, but the current 5 is more squared-off and narrower, and distinctly different in the shape of the curve on the lower left and the proportions of the strokes on top.

You can see the original "5" here:

Between the original Group W "5" and the current narrow "5," there was another version of the Group W "5" that was italicized.

As for Chicago, while WBBM has used the eye and some form of a "2" for many years, I wouldn't call it the same logo at all. There have been at least four very different versions of the "2" in just the last 20 years or so. The same is true of WCBS-TV in New York and KCBS-TV in LA.

Here's another oldie-but-goodie: how long has WMAZ in Macon used the "13" with the heart in the middle? That has to go back at least to the early 80s, if not longer.

WCAX/3 in Burlington, Vermont has had the same logo for at least 22 years. I believe WXIX/19 in Newport-Cincinnati used the same 19 logo for over 20 years, even after affilating with FOX. Only in the past year did they update the logo. Detroit's WDIV used the same line 4 logo from 1979-2003, although with some colour modifications in the mid-80s and again in the early 90s. Finally, Watertown's WWNY has had the same 7 logo since the late 80s, as I can recall from watching them in my younger years (Mr. Fybush can give us a more exact answer I think, haha).

Toronto's CITY-TV has had essentially the same logo since its inception in 1972, although originally the font was less bold, it had a circle around it and it mentioned Channel 79 and Cable 7 in small text underneath. The text became more bold in the early 80s and the circle was dropped, and the channel mentions were omitted in 1986, although the Cable 7 part has returned in the past year on some promos. Finally in 2003 the colour of the logo went from red-and-blue to white. That's the closest to a longtime logo in use in Canada, not counting the CTV network logo which dates back to 1967.

I think the current circle-7 variant at WWNY dates to the late 1980s. It was certainly in use by the early 90s. There was a blockier solid 7 that they used before that.

M.J., do you have any idea how old the TVA logo is? It dates at least to the 1980s, doesn't it?

I grew up in LA, and remember the Circle 7 logo showing up when I was no more than 10 or 11 years old = on KABC-TV. So that would have been about 1962 or 63. Before that, they used a very plain blocky number 7.

The Westinghouse logos were also used at their radio stations, like KFWB and WINS - and were developed into an entire font set. There is a church near my house that currently uses the Westinghouse font on its signage, and I find it very weird - because I associate it entirely with broadcasting.

Maybe they were using the knockoff font, "Anklepants" (don't dare use that name in reference to the real Group W font).
