STATION PICKS FLY 94 CHARLESTON

OK gang I don't know much about this station, but I know it went through a lot of formats during the nineties... Since 95SX was more AC at the time Fly was Chuck Towns CHR Choice... I only got to listen to Fly when WPUB signed off the air at the time was 11PM... They were very Dance friendly from what I remember... So now for the questions... I know they did not have the best signal, but why did not not make it as a CHR station??? Was it due to different owners, poor jocks, no good sales staff, or was it the music??? All I remember was The Hot Noise and thought kinda cool station then a few months later it was hooked up to the dish with ABC/SMN Stardust format... That is some of the questions that have been going through my brain... CC1

I can't really tell you the story behind that one. But I do recall they had the coolest top of the hour ID. One one channel the AM was identified and in the other at the same time the FM was ID'd: W S S P Charleston/W S S P-FM Goose Creek/Charleston

Flashback to 1992---7th grade---Fly 94 was the station I listened to. It wasn't a 24 hour station they signed off at 2am and came back on around 5:30am. Good music---I remember the short lived techno block they did on weekends. I don't where the DJs are at now (Brandon Young, Party Marty aka Mythological Legend <was at 95SX after Fly flipped>, Shane Duane <went to Z-93 after the flipped>). I think Concord Media owned that station at that time, now it is run by Clear Channel.

Formats 94.3 has been
94 Jams (urban)
Fly 94 (urban pop)
Stardust 94 (big band/swing)
Power 94 (urban)
NewsRadio 94 (newstalk)

The owners of 95SX had actually moved the CHR format to 94.3 when 95.1 went to a more adult approach, and were running both WSSP and WSSX. I think some of the jocks even switched over to 94.3 at the same time--Summer 1992. Between the stints as 94 Jams and Fly 94, it had been Easy 94.3 for awhile, with an easy listening format. Fly 94 lasted until September 1993, and Charleston was completely without a top 40 format until 95SX came back to the format a few years later.

I do remember the top of the hour ID, but AM 1450 remained WUJM, left over from the days simulcasting 94 Jams.

It always seemed odd that a top 40 station would sign off overnight... but like Iceman said they would stay on until 2am or so....

I'm not surprised since the early 90s were not kind to Charleston radio. This was about the same period where Oldies 102.5 was operating off the bird almost full-time with the exception of a live morning show. I think they were LMAed or bought out by WEZL during that time.

Since we've brought up 94.3, what was the formats prior to 1988 (prior to Hot 94 WWHT's sign-on)? I remember the formats that Iceman had mentioned.

I did what I could remember about 94.3 on Wikipedia. I couldn't remember most of this, but I did hear the big band/nostalgia format in 1994 in Myrtle Beach. For some odd reason they were doing it on 98.9.

So if any of you know more than what's there, well, you know what to do.
