STATION PICKS WICI MANNING SUMTER

This week I wanted to pick a station in a smaller town that has gone through many changes and this one fits the bill quite well... What started out sounding like a very solid urban AC back in 1995 went through a lot of formats... Some of the formats include R/CHR, Urban AC again then straight up hip hop as Power 94.7 before going silent till the purchase by Miller communications as Mix 94.7... When Mix launched Dave Baker put one hell of a TOP 40 station on the air, but it started loosing its way... I went into Hot AC Mode, but kept the Mix handle... Before we knew it a Bad Dog was born which for the time being is the format of the day... Gary "Thrills" Mills was one of the jocks who really made that station come alive along with a lot of others... It is now time for you guys to chime in with your thoughts on what could be called ICY HOT MIXING BAD DOG :) :) :). CC1

Another station gone crap is what WICI FM is now. I remember back in 99 is when I first found WICI by accident. (That's about the time my DX'ing started) I thought it was an awesome station with a very big city feel. I remember them first as Choice 94.7, Icy Hot, then Power. Then it was ok when miller signed on as Mix top 40 as it played some dance and other good tracks. Then for some reason, Miller stopped thinking outside the box and turned all their stations into snoozefest satellite-fed BS. The only exception is WWKT Power 99.3 in Flo-town. I still reminisce about WICI-FM's good days, as it and DM were good urbans.

I'll jump in here and tell what I know about the original WICI. Yes, it was an innovative and good sounding station for a small market such as Sumter. Much of the staff were WWDM alumni ( which makes sense, since I believe it was about the time DM finally moved its studios to Cola). In fact Leroy Durrant, who I remember as one of the fathers of the Big DM, was one of the original investors, an air personality, and I believe GM. But the times I heard the station, they seemed to have a low ad load. In addition to WWDM, they also had to compete with 93.7 (can't remember calls) licensed to Bishopville. Both stations programmed adult urban comtemporary (93.7 was the Touch satelite program, I believe). Eventually they sold to someone (Miller?) who thought they could serve Florence with that signal. 93.7 also eventually "moved" to Florence, actually Lamar, and became WSIM, another Miller station. The sad thing is, I believe Sumter could use another urban, probably hip-hop, since there doesn't seem to be another station with a good signal and that format in the area.

Well fortmill, I believe 99.3 WWKT serves Sumter pretty well. Even though they are considered a Rhy. CHR, they have sounded very hip-hopish every time I was able to hear them. Think 96.1 the beat charlotte.
