Station Picks: WSSX (95-SX) Charleston

(Hope Neil doesn't mind that I've borrowed this idea from him). ;D

It's hard to believe that WSSX is 25 years old! It signed on in January, 1981 as a AOR leaning CHR (similar to what WLS-Chicago was doing at the time) and evolved from there.

My 3 favorite memories were:

Discovering the station for the first time in 1985. I believe Brian Phillips was programing it at the time. My only drawback was I couldn't listen to it as often as I wanted to since WROQ/Charlotte was on the same frequency and I've live in an area where both stations signals would clash and WROQ won out most of the time.

The time when the stations finances were tight (around 1990-91) when they were the "Lowcountry's Low Budget Radio Station". Yes, it was very cheesy, but very creative in retrospect. They had promos saying "WEZL Got The Weasel, We've Got....The Frog (frog croak sfx) 95-SX". They had listeners sing "95-SX" since they could not afford new jingles. BTW: Did they ever disclose what "Afoteratomers" (sp?) meant? I've called Jeff "The Hoser" Williams one afternoon about it and he said that they had plans to do a contest using that bit, so they could not disclose what it meant just yet.

When 95-SX came back in September, 1995 after spending 3 years doing a AC format (under 95 Mix and Mix 95.1). It didn't take a genius to figure out that there was a hole for CHR in that market and it was better for them to go back to CHR rather than being the 3rd or 4th AC.

Anyway, here is some 95-SX jingles (yeah, you know that I've just had to work in a jingle reference somewhere in here). ;D

What ever became of Brian Phillips. He was pretty good back in the mid 80's. Also where are: Monty Jett (WDXZ), Michael Dee (WKQB), Mark Cadanella (96.9FM)?

Pretty sure he's heading up the programming at CMT. He went there after he put Q100 in Atlanta on the air. I think he went to CMT in 2001.
