STATION PICKS ---- YOU DECIDE THIS TIME!!!!!

Ok guys with the request of Paul B Walker this week you guys get to pick the station pick... Lets see where this goes and next week I will be back with a new station to talk about... Since things are going crazy at work with three new managers this is a good time for me to let you guys drive the ship... I will be giving my thoughts later on... Take Care... CC1

Or prehaps WYAV from Myrtle Beach or WYNN in Florence (since both stations are from areas that hasn't been covered in out discusion of "Great Stations from the past".

Robyn

I'd like to hear about WRBK/90.3 in Richburg. All in all, a pretty cool oldies station that broadcasts from Columbia to Charlotte. If WFAE isn't on in my car, then its definately on WRBK...

How about WABV-AM 1590 in Abbeville?

Ok, so I'm biased, but I really don't know a heckuva lot bout the place I work for, only minor bits n pieces here n there.

Hey Robyn I really liked the old days of of WYAV and POWER 98... Now those were some good radio wars that if a lot of companies had the you know whats today would still make radio fun... I think for me at least power and wave were at their prime in the 89-90 time frame... What I remember most about wave at that time was the fact they had their music pitched way up and I am not talking the normal +3 or +4 speed they had to cranking at at least +5... If Kahuna post I bet he can shed a lot of light on wave... As for WYNN I think it was in it's prime right around that same time... Fayne Anderson who was doing their CE work had that station sounding the best I had ever heard... The only other station that had audio as good as WYNN was Z93 in its rock days when Doug Carter was doing their CE work as well... I had an old Panasonic Boom box that had the red meter lights on it and when I listened to those two stations those lights were peged... God I miss those old days... I think we all should by a radio station and show everybody how it should be done... CC1

Rock 102, WKZQ...The Energy FM, WKZQ...101.7 WKZQ...no matter how you slice it, if you're gonna profile stations like WYAV and Power, you gotta start with the station that held a 70 share in all dayparts in the 70's and early 80's until WYAV got it's collective shit together around '83-84... Power's success, in my opinion, was a direct derivative of 'KZQ's because Power's dominant position on the Grand Strand was co-ordinated by John Kilgo, a 'Q alumnus. Power's position was cemented and strengthened by the hiring of Nikki Nite. Of course, I guess an argument could be made that the radio wars in MB actually began with WNMB (where Benji Norton started, working with legend Dick Biondi) and WTGR('KZQ's AM at the time...but I'm rather partial to The Q.

WHSC, Hartsville, definitely!

Just kidding. Just wanted to see the very first station I ever worked at on a broadcast board. Incidentally, Greg Fowler, the PD at KZQ (if you don't count GM Bill Hennecy, lol) when they were kicking the world's ass in the late seventies/early eighties, was the PD at WHSC a year or two before I started in radio at the tender age of 14.

I'm totally down with the Q as this week's winner. Greg Fowler, Hennecy, Brian Phillips(different Brian Phillips than the one that used to program WSSX Charleston, Q100 Atlanta and and currently CMT), J. Patrick Milan, Shotgun Jeff Stone(who also was the original Cat Summers, Easy Randy Street, Cadillac Jack and Human Numan, to name a few of his successful on air names) and The Freakin' Deacon (awesomely funny guy).

When I was in high school (in Hartsville) I could plug my cable tv cable into my Marantz tuner and pick up WKZQ and Big WAYS in Charlotte (another nominee for another time). After that, I always LUSTED after a job at the Q.

HOLY CRAP SCOTT :) I never knew you started at HSC in HVILLE... That station AM or when 98.5 signed on in 92 had a lot of different owners in the ninties including Mr Buck who at one time owned WCOS, but now it is owned by the cloud company... As for KZQ that was one kick *** station as well... KZQ was bad to the bone and heck even when wave first signed on it was my of a Hot AC type station from what I remember... It is amazing to see a lot of the names who either started in MB or ended up working there were all at one time ROQ alum... What is even more interesting is how they all were able to make sucessful stations at the beach, but never could make Q really kick butt... Asd for Big Ways there will never ever be any radio with that type of creation on the air again which is very sad... CC1

Yep, I started at WHSC in 1975. A guy I played basketball with in high school, Mike Oates(I played for the JV team, he played for the varsity), worked at WHSC and talked me into applying for a part time job. Back then, you had to have your 3rd Class license endorsed for broadcasting, so I had to go to Atlanta and pass Elements 1, 2 and 9 (FCC law, phonetic alphabet and the math required to compute transmitter readings) to get the license...at 14! Mike, the afternoon guy Roy Gregg and Jacob Will trained me. Don't know where Roy is now, but Mike sells advertising for television in Augusta and, get this, Jacob went on to become a HUGE opera star, travelling the world. He had a stint at the San Francisco Opera House, put out several well received opera albums and currently is on the USC music faculty.

Great to see how fondly KZQ is remembered here. That's where I got started. Actually, I worked at the AM sister station WTGR first. When I finally made it to the Q, Greg Fowler had just left, having taken that gig with Alabama. Henry K was the new PD.
Brian Phillips had left. He was a self-absorbed myopic jerk; branded me a "weirdo new-waver" because I was pretty vocal about giving exposure to new rock bands like the Pretenders, the Clash and U2, all of whom he said sucked and would never make it. LOL!
Chris William & Marv were still there but John Van Pelt had just left. Good ol' Deac was still there ringing his booby bell and was my closest friend during my tenure. Al Mason and Sara Hussey were there too. There was also a guy whose name I can't remember who was a stalwart at KZQ. Real rolly-polly guy with a great voice who taught me how to edit tape for commercials. I think he went to Florence after the Q. Damn this pre-alzheimers!
Anyway, I sure miss those days when the Hen was absolute Monarch and EVERYBODY was tuned into the Q.

Hi John,

You're probably gonna wish you didn't speak up. I remember hearing a story about you in the old 'TGR building behind the 'Q. Apparently, it was something to the effect of you running out into the lobby and, for some reason, jumping as you went through the door. As I recall from the story, you cracked your head pretty good when your head hit the top of the door frame. I think I mentioned it almost every time I saw you...so I guess you'll have some Brian Phillips-like adjectives to toss my way...lol. Sorry, dude.

Anyway, the roly-poly guy you're talking about is Bob Chase. Marv hired me. Chris had gone to 'ROQ. Marv was there, Sarah, Linda King, Deacon, Chase, Mixin' Dixon, John Kilgo, Jeff McMurdy and Dwayne Ward. And then there was the ever present Hen-man.

Also, John, you may remember another guy that helped me out when I started radio in Hartsville...Mark Shaffer. He worked at WTGR back in the day.

Hope you're doing well, John.

so.....can we just all agree on Rock Radio 101.7-KZQ?

;D

Sorry, dude. Didn't mean to offend your sensibilities by reminiscing about the old days...didn't think anyone would mind.

Come on Scott, 61 Big WAYS was not available on Cable TV of Hartsville, since it was an AM station. However, Cable TV did have a very popular FM service, which included WROQ, WBCY, and WSOC from Charlotte, WQDR from Raleigh and about 5 other FMs. FM on cable was very big in Hartsville due to the horrible selection of radio available in the Pee Dee in the 70s and 80s. Certainly, WHSC led the pack---one of the worst I ever heard. At least Hartsville had WSDC, also known as the "projects station" since it was located in the middle of a housing project.

KZQ has my vote. That station rocked 10+ years ago when I drove through. Still is pretty good now.
