STATION PICKS ---- YOU DECIDE THIS TIME!!!!!

Well I did this a few weeks ago so lets see what happens this go around... This week it is in your hands you decide what station to talk about... It can be a station that is on the air or could be one of our past stations... I will put this weeks topic on cruise control and will chime in... During the last You Decide we kinda scratched the surface of WKZQ so if you guys and gals want to pick that subject back up I would love to hear some of the old stories of Energy 101 WKZQ as well as other stations... Have a good week everybody... It is going to be a very busy week for me with the Big Shots coming in plus I got to come up with six strategies on how to improve customer service as well as devise a plan on how to expedite wait times in our store while using the resources we have... Gotta love the Bottom Line... CC1

Charleston and Florence both seem to be covered a little less here, so why not hit some stations that haven't (to my knowledge) been mentioned? WSUY and WYBB in Charleston, for example, or WHLZ and WJMX (FM) in Florence?

That's cool by me. No matter which station you choose, tho, I'm warning you, chances are that I've worked there at one time or another(i.e.WJMX). I was a tumbleweed back in the day. Cool thread Carroll.

WJMX back in the day was bad to the bone... I don't know much about its AM days, but when it was FM when the PEPSI BOTTLE People had JMX back in the day under the leadership of Harold Miller it was awesome... To me it reminded me of an Pee Dee version of Kiss FM up in Asheville... It was in your face radio, but was very active in the community... Some of the Jocks I remember were Mitch Adams who did mornings, Cocoa who went on to the Foxx in Columbia, Bill Post and a whole bunch of others who really made that a Super Station... Unlike today where a lot of the music is heavy on the rhythmic side, back in the day you may have heard Madonna slide into a WHO song and it blended perfect.... On Saturdays they were all exclusive with nothing but good old classic rock where everything from AC/DC to ZZ top was on the play list... If you did not like that you could go shagging on the beach with Dan E. every Saturday which to me was very popular, but was also very out of place on a CHR/Rock hybrid... and yes Scott I remember you doing mornings there as well... After JMX was sold to Root Communications in the mid to late 90's although they were still sounding good from the work that Harold and gang put into it the station slowly started going down the drain... When I was there last year it almost seemed like it was WYNN LITE where there was quite a bit of hip hop and r&b, but I guess I am getting old now and it just did not feel like the same radio station I remember even just 10 years ago... Harold has lived the dream. When he was a part timer at Z96(Catdaddy), he always wanted to make a difference and own a station.
Who was the owner of Pepsi back then? Freddie Avant? Anyway, Harold went to him and after an emotional, theatrical presentation as to why investing a million into WJMX was the way to go, Avant(or whomever) told him to give him the weekend. By the time Harold got home that evening, there was a message for him from Avant. It was a GO! Things went fast after that. He got Benji to do PD/mornings and the rest is history. That was around the 1984-1985 time period (I think...I'm getting old, too, Carroll, so it might've been in 1950...lol). I went to WJMX in the second half of 1986 after my fiasco of a tenure at WCKN in Anderson/Greenville. Coco was doing middays, Bob Boswell (the Infamous St. Andrews Panty Bandit) was doing afternoons, Dave Baker was evenings and Tuscon the Capricorn was overnights. Martin Greene(Dr. Henley Smythe) was the PD by then. FYI, when Harold bought it, WJMX was 106X. Only later after getting the old WPDZ Z103 freq, did WJMX evolve into 103X.

As for the AM, I remember listening to Tony Jay(?) on 97X(AM 970) in the early 80's...I think.

Hey Scott is Martin still around? I think he worked all the Pee Dee stations at one time or another... I remember him on WJMX, Gator 105.5 as well as WDAR when they tried Classic Rock from ABC/SMN... I think he did mornings when it was AOR... CC1

Not sure where he's at. Last I heard was several years ago when he apparently was having some health problems (for some reason, I'm thinking he had a brain tumor or clot or something), but that he was getting better. Benji, Harold or Dave Baker would be better qualified to answer questions as to Martin's whereabouts.
