STATION SOLD IN SAINT AUGUSTINE

And the plot thickens! Phillips Broadcasting (owned by Kris Phillips) now has or will have two translators in the market and the former husband has one translator in the market and we cannot forget WYRE FM. There is room for all these folks but it is going to be a real competitive market and all will need to put there best programming and selling skills to work.

Yes, it's called competition! In a free marketplace, let's hope this new level of competition results in better revenue for the owner/operators, better results for the advertisers, and better radio for the listeners! :)

In this whole free marketplace conversation, there is a fine line, a cross-over point.

A sleepy market stagnates. Those of us who have worked the old single-station-markets of years ago have seen that.

A competitive free marketplace forces everyone to "be on their toes" and the public benefits, the business community benefits, and the station owners benefit... and at the end of the day, the listeners benefit.

In radio, an over-saturated free marketplace gets to be like the little old lady who stayed out of town a few days longer than she planned and her flock of dogs left locked up in the house were hungry and emaciated when she finally came home after getting sick while out of town.

The theory of the competitive free marketplace is that when a marketplace is over saturated, someone leaves the stage, and maybe a second someone leaves the stage, and then we end up with a healthy market place that once again those who lecture on the topic of the free marketplace at work are once again proven right.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to always work in the radio marketplace. (1.) The FCC laws and rules on licensing which causes the guy with the skinny, emaciated dog to hang on until a buyer comes along... which for my entire lifetime as always worked... until recently. (2.) The perception of "being in show business" and in the spotlight always generates at least one emaciated dog too many still alive in some markets. (Some markets degenerate to the point that the entire market gets to be like that little old lady's house full of emaciated dogs.)

And now several more posts and no mention of WYRE. Why? Maybe because the demographic for Phillips/Geddings formats on AM don't really cross the demo for WYRE, which skews MUCH younger. I would also not discount the length of time WFOY has been a community station and WYRE's much shorter history.

Just to be clear, I wasn't denegrating what the new stations are going to do...WYRE-FM is an 18-49 Contemporary FM station skewing Female...and the chance of taking either of the newer stations into a sharing pattern with WYRE-FM is remote. Aside from forging it's own local market position, WYRE-FM has to compete with FM stations similarly targeted out of Jacksonville...WAPE-FM for starters. I think what's about to happen will be a case study of what potential there is for traditional AM moving to FM, and how those stations perform and grow with FM translators. Having spent so many years in AM, and being a former AM group operator. I'll be watching and listening with great interest!

OK, now that Fennessy has mentioned WYRE, hopefully you're less frustrated! LOL Seriously, WYRE is the only remaining full power commercial signal (Class C3) left in St. Augustine, serving most, if not all, of St. John's county. The proposed FM translators will not have that kind of signal reach (No Reach Communications pun intended), but, IMO, it is exciting that the AM radio operators are looking to the future, and investing in placing their respective formats on FM, to better serve St. Augustine, and, hopefully, make their stations more competitive! While there are only so many dollars to go around, good luck to all, including WYRE! ;)

Rumor has it that Kevin Gettings has his "tanslator" on the air and is playing oldies in St. Augustine. There is a link to the stream but I am told it is not yet working. If anybody has the change listen to it let us know what you hear and think. On the way to LA from Atlanta for a few days so there should be some good radio.

Tried to listen to their stream, no audio is there a direct link to their webfeed?

I picked up both the audio stream, and the on the air AM 1170 signal, here in Southwest Jacksonville. The music sounds good, not sure if it's satellite fed or locally originated. From the web link, their visual gives the impression that the FM (translator) is the larger of the two stations, and that may be the owners intention, although the AM signal gives the translator THE reason to exist, in a sense. Also, I believe, even though the AM is a daytimer, the translator signal can be on 24/7. While I realize it's now legal to have the call letters WSOS on AM in one city, and a WSOS-FM in another city, and different owners, do you think there will be any listener confusion for those who can pick up TWO different WSOS's on FM? Any concerns from Renda? Any opinions? ;)

A whole 36 watts on that translator? Did they mount it on the AM tower I wonder? I also wonder if they'll be able knock it up to the max allowed 250 watts?

I disagree with Rob 42! I was able to get the station's stream and found the music to be all over the board and not very good quailty. This could be the stream but not sure. With a hugh 35 or so watts the station will be hard pressed to even penetrate homes near the transmitter site much less in the St. Augustine city limits. I am not sure about increasing the power but with limited power of 30 something watts they are going to have a hard road to travel. I am in LA so I can only pick up the stream right now, is there anybody local listening?

I'll give it a whirl the last time I heard it was dead air but heard it faintly.

Listening now, very over compressed audio, but glad to hear strawberry letter 23 from a record (can hear the vinyl...) If I'm ever there, at least I'll be able to listen to 99.5 while downtown. It's a good 6 hour drive but do plan on visiting.

he is all over the board, your right "18 and life.." but do enjoy the music. at least he's not YULEing it like the majority of the stations are.

Yes, when I heard the stream an on air from Jax earlier, it WAS very compressed, and, from what I briefly heard, my guess is they WILL be playing a deeper variety of hits than would be allowed in a larger market/corporate run setting, Actually, I'm suprised Mr. Gedding has gotten the station on the air this quickly. I'm curious why guys from LA and South Florida, or wherever, are so interested in St. Augustine? Maybe this is the center of our Galaxy, this could really turn into the Eastern version of KEARTH! Awesome!

Maybe it's a touristy hotspot vs this hell hole.. there's a lot of paranormal investigators who do visit there.
