STATION SOLD IN SAINT AUGUSTINE

No, I was not being critical of your use of the word severe.

I was intending to poke fun at the idea that people do run stations in a style that is like driving on a dark night with your headlights off. It's asking for trouble. And I was lamenting some experiences I had where people are driving in the dark without headlights and have no idea why you would suggest to them that life would be safer for them... and for me.... if they would turn the lights on and pay attention to how the world works.

Cowboy, thanks for the clarification. How right you are!

Today Ms. Phillips hired a station manager. At least she's listening to somebody.

WFOY IS the heritage station in St. Augustine. Hopefully, this will be a step in the right direction.

Was in St. Augustine today, and had time to listen to WSOS AM/99.5 translator. The so called imaging on the station consists of dry reads. The one that made me drive off the road was "Thank you for making us St. Augustines new #1 radio station". Really? I thought it would take more than say 100 listeners to be the new #1.

Again great logo for the station. Poor music library and rotation. Over compressed audio, and lackluster cheap sounding imaging. What a shame! A great idea, went south very quick.

All I can says is what my partner of the first radio station I ever bought said to me. "Your trying to hard. I think people might just like bad radio".

Some of these boards prove that every day.

<chuckle, chuckle.> I think you guys are onto something profound here.

The problem is... there are so many kinds of bad radio... we are still left with the question: Which kind of bad radio is the best (bad) radio?

I'm going into the kitchen, make a BIG pot of coffee, and think about that one for awhile. ;D

Why has so much space been offered to such a small market with some really bad radio? I attempted to spend some time with the two station's stream over the past couple of days and found no change. Dead air, poor imaging, extremely poor automation, music on 99.5 was just a tad better than horrible. Seems to me the new station manager at WFOY was going to "right" the ship but I understand he has no broadcast experience! Phillips should have two translators on the air soon. WFOY will most likely continue to do news/talk but one can only wonder what the format will be on WAOC which is currently doing ESPN. Hope they take more time to get it right than Geddings did with his oldies station. Since I am writing this post maybe I should try to answer my own question!

So much time is being offered and discussed on these two stations, because in this day and age, it isn't that hard to have a decent sounding radio station. BUT if those are top have no clue, then we understand why a station sounds so bad.

In other Jax news today, WBOB will be carrying the Jacksonville Sharks. Multi year deal.

I certainly hear what you are saying here 1250. She has not done much right with WFOY so can assume the same mindset will transfer to WAOC. If they keep it sports I feel they need to do something more than ESPN and dead air. Think WAOC could have an opportunity to be a contender in the market but it will all depend on format and presentation. Might add that she must have a perofessional selling staff or team on the street if they intend to show revenue growth. It appears that both Philllps and Geddings operate on the cheap so I would not expct much from either. Sad to say this maya be a waste of two translators in the market.

Tried to listen to Geddings WSOS in St. Augustine this moring and finally had to give up. I heard the last note of a tune then dead air for close to 15 minutes and that was in morning drive which I was told Geddings is the DJ. Have no idea when it came back on for I attempted to listen to WFOY only to find you cannot get their website to load. Go figure!

There is top notch, inexpensive automation software available everywhere now. These problems still shouldn't be occuring, if you just put a little money, time and effort into their products.

I always said there should be a test you have to pass to be able to buy a radio station. Think about how many people would fail it?

Has anybody noticed that WSOS seems to be sounding a little better as far as execution goes? The music is still all over the place and the imaging has not changed but the execution seems to be better. Still more dead air that a real radio station should have but greatly improved from what it was the last time I heard it. Did attempt to listen to WFOY and nothing has changed there except their new manager is a jerk!

I've listened to WSOS and I feel its about the same or worse programming wise. Jerk FM in the WFOY building fits right in with the rest of the people there.

A number of weeks have past since I last listened to the market and I am sorry to report that nothing has changed! Do feel that Kingston's station sounds pretty good. What will happen with Phillips gets her two FM translators on the air? Will it be some of the SOS just at a new frequency?
