Station vehicles

I'm wondering what kinds of vehicles are used by stations in CT.

Some of this may be a bit out of date, but from what I recall:

WTIC has a large remote van, perhaps one for AM and one for FM and a bunch of news cars.
WHCN has a box truck.
Power 104 has a H2 Hummer (at least someone told me that they did).
WKSS used to have a Land Cruiser. Haven't seen it in a while.
WWYZ has a large remote van with mast.
WCCC has three H1 Hummers, and their AM WTMI has a BMW and a Benz.
WDRC has a van. They used to have a Chevy pick-up. I'm told that years ago they used to have a caddie limo and a truck with a stage on the back!
WLAT (910) has a van.
WNEZ (1480) has a SUV.
Radio Disney (1550) has a couple of vans.
WRYM (840) has a remote truck.

That's just off the top of my head and may not be correct.

Are there any truly unique vehicles out there? I've always thought that one of those old military Power Wagons or a armored personnel carrier would make a great station vehicle. I think the latter has been done in other states, perhas as close as Boston.
 
The only radio station vehicles I ever see are for 95.1 WRKI and 97.3 WZBG, but I can't recall what they are, so they must be nothing special. I think they are just vans.
 
from what i know... (some may be wrong)

WHCN: bmw x5 and a van (havent seen the box truck since classic rock days)
WKSS: gmc yukon and a van (havent seen the land cruiser in a few years)
WWYZ: chevy trailblazer or explorer? i've seen a van and the remote broadcast truck as well
WPHH: toyota sequoia. they dont have a hummer as far as i know.
WTIC-FM: i've only seen a van
WCCC: everyone knows the h1 hummers
WZMX: ford expedition i think
WRCH: van
WKCI: i think they have a toyota sequoia too and a van
WAVZ: toyota 4-runner?
WELI: Jeep?

what happens to one when a stations format changes?

What happens to the vehicle once the station changes formats, for instance radio 104?

You get it "re-wrapped" most of em arent custom paint jobs but sorta shrink wrapped.

radio 104 had a seqoia, they put a wrap on it for power and stiill use it. they also have a van, they just re-logod that. HCN had a truck, they stripped it and got the BMW for the river when it flipped, still have the van, it's just black now. country has an SUV (chevy i think) RV with a mast, and a van, Kiss has an SUV and a van, and i think a focus or something like that. and ESPN 1410 has an old ass green jeep with no logo. The mystery machine still sits in the parking garage, member that from 104?

To answer your querry, the fact that several people responded to the question I tossed out means that some people care about the topic.

In a broader sense, why might someone be interested in station vehicles? Perhaps it is because promotion is a huge part of the business of radio, and the vehicle the station puts on the street can play a role in the station's image and branding and can help publicize the station the way bumper stickers, billboards and TV ads can.

I think most of the people who hang out here are interested in radio or work in radio, and I find that both of those kinds of folks tend to be into just about every aspect of radio. So you're not into station vehicles. Great! The neat thing about a board such as this is that you can skip over anything that doesn't appeal to you.

You're right. WZMX does have a FORD SUV. I forget if it it's the biggest SUV ford makes or not. They did a remote broadcast from the now defunct cell phone store that was inside the Southington Shaw's Supermarket last year.

When 990 AM was hip-hop as Blaze 990 they had a Green Dodge Durango with Orange Flames on it. Or so their PD Dr. Philip Duncan mentioned on the air. He wasn't a very honest man, so I don't know if it's true or not.

When I interned at 990AM they ran a news/talk format. We didn't have a station vehicle. Whenever we did a remote broadcast we went in the GM's Green Ford Taurus. (I never went to any of the station remotes. One I went to I had my mom take me tough). Keep in mind 990AM was basically a one man operation. The GM was also the PD, afternoon host, janitor, etc. His wife was the secretary, traffic manager, office manager, call screener, etc.

I don't know if they just borrowed it or what, but once I was listening to DJ Anthony's Regaeton Show on SuperMax 990 and he said look for him at the New Haven Puerto Rican Parade in the SuperMax Convertible. Then again since DJ Anthony is only 9 or 10 he could be lying. How did a 9 year old become a DJ? His daddy was the PD. His daddy was the one who paid the station owner for the airtime.

Actually, not that it really matters, but Phillip's Durango was Maroonish in color. Believe it or not, it caught people's attention. When I first arrived at the station, people around town would make reference to it when I talked about the station. They would say things like: "Oh, yeah, I've seen the Durango...that's the station you mean right? With the Durango?" <P ID="signature">______________

I've seen it, though not too long before blaze was history.

How much does something like that cost? I ask because I saw a van for some local rap group in Cromwell all done up like that, and realised the promotion was possibly for a currently released CD and thought it a bit much if they had to go and change it for the next release.

depends on where you get it done.. full wraps cost in the area of several thousand. basic decaling is a few hundred. most radio stations will tie in a client and include their logo on the wrap and have them pay for the install.

The station with the Hummer is Hot 93.7 as I saw it on their website where the pictures are located. It has Hot 93.7 all over it. For Power 104.1 they have an old ford van which I think Radio 104 used to use.
Oh yeah one time I saw a Radio Disney van, its a Chevy van.
