StationPlaylist - what soundcards?

Anyone who is running StationPlaylist - can you tell me what brand and model of soundcard(s) you are running with the system, or what you would recommend as an 'ideal' card - only needs 2 channels of balanced analog out, no digital needed.

I've used a variety of sound cards but nothing with balanced outputs, as the consoles I had to deal with would work with -10db unbalanced (i.e., consumer) outputs fine. I too wouldn't mind a recommendation of a card with balanced outputs but hopefully nothing to break the bank.

The M-Audio Deltas aren't bad - I've use StationPlaylist Studio with a variety of devices ranging from onboard RealTek, SB Audigy, Delta-410, Delta-1010LT etc. They all work fine. SPL Studio uses the BASS audio DLL (as does mAirList), so any audio card has compatibility with that audio engine should work just fine.

I would vote for a used VX222, very good, stable driver. Discontinued, but they sell cheap on ebay. Now, it is 222HR or 222e (PCI-E). I always buy the e version. It's a little under 500 at BSW.

The used VX222 will do you well. Check the driver support on Digigram, though. I use a lot of Digigram cards in Audiovault and I know in Windows 7, I have to use HR or e cards only and I run my automation on 7...

While offering unbalanced-only ins and outs, I'm running StationPlaylist with my student station with the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card. Very good results but I heard it's been discontinued.

FWIW....

I tried using a VX-222 with Pro Tools 10/Win 7 64 bit install last night and it refused to open
because of the non-standard buffer sizes the VX uses, such as standard 32k 64k 128k and on and on.
I found a work around by using ASIO4ALL Universal ASIO Driver For WDM Audio.
Yet to be seen if it will work reliably. I have ordered an M-Audio Audiophile 192 to replace it.

I know Pro Tools is not StationPlaylist, but you never know what StationPlaylist might want to see also.
I think I would ask them, before buying a VX-222. Of course, if you have one, try it.

A minor detail for the VX is that the breakout harness has the positive(+) outputs wired to pin 3 on the
XLR's, instead of the now standard pin 2.

FYI Chris...Digigram has recently/finally posted a beta driver for the plain VX-222 & WIN 7.
They left the (.msi) extension off the file, but you can rename it and add the extension and it works.

Thanks everyone who has commented so far.

Balanced inputs and outputs will be needed, so that rules out most (all?) of the the M-Audio cards.

Keep the suggestions and ideas coming!

The M-Audio Audiophile 192 is balanced in and out. And about $125.00.

I just bought an M-Audio Audiophile 192 off eBay for $75. What a GREAT card! I haven't tried it with StationPlaylist, but I plan to build a Breakaway Audio Processor to try out.

Thank you. That will be great for my Adobe boxes. I use old 222's in them and REALLY want to get them on 7. They are my last XP boxes in existence.

In Audiovault, I use 882e's and 222e's with 0 trouble with the Windows 7 drive that BE provided me. They have one for both 32 and 64 bit, depending on which environment you wish to run Audiovault under.

If using this card for Breakaway Broadcast, it will work but it will overshoot like mad on some songs--fact is, this is one of the first cards I used for BBP. Best example I've found is the first 10-15 seconds of Three Dog Night - Black And White. Watch the mod monitor hit 125-130% when that one comes on. If it's just for playing around, you'll never hear the difference. If it's on a 'real' station, the modulation will need to be dropped to about 70-75% to insure no overmodulation occurs on those few troublesome songs.

Did you do the mod on the card ? Hard to beat the Marian trace alpha for Breakaway with it's dc output.
No, I haven't done the mod... yet. I am a contract engineer and this really isn't for any specific station. I've just heard a lot about BBP and I have been wanting to try it. I downloaded the demo and I just got the card a few days ago. If all goes well, I will look into spending REAL money. But either way, the Audiophile 192 works great, and for the price, I would recommend it with automation use.
