Stations changing hands in the Wilmington area..

It looks like WSFM-FM, a.k.a. "Surf 98.3", has been sold by Sunrise Broadcasting to Sea-Comm Media for
$825,000, for those who have lived here for many years, the "Surf" slogan was originally started by them
back in 1987 at 107.1, then 107.5, so i guess you can say this is a homecoming of sort for this station.
In addition, Sea-Comm is selling WUIN-FM 106.7 to "Carolina Christian Radio" for only $152,000, which
means "The Penguin" will soon be no more, and Carolina Christian Radio is selling WMYT-AM 1180, which
currently carries talk and teaching programs, look for this format to move to 106.7, and as for WMYT, they
will be owned by Sea-Comm, marking the first AM they have purchased here, but since they are a daytime
only station, they might keep it, or sell it to another owner, unless they find a way to get approval to stay
on 24 hours a day, if that happens, don't be surprised if they go Sports against WMFD, or they will air talk
shows that don't air in the market, probably from Fox, we shall see.

Well, since this posting started, Sunrise Broadcasting is in the process of re-acquiring WLGD 98.7 in Jacksonville,
which went under a trust over a year ago to satisfy FCC requirements, now that WSFM 98.3 is going to be sold to
Sea-Comm Media, once Jim Goodman gets WLGD back, is there a chance one of their Wilmington FM's will switch
here?, WKXB (Jammin 99.9) might be at the top, but do they want to move Sunny 104.5 or Z107.5?, this will be
one to watch toward the end of 2010.

Any speculations about the format???? ???

For the record, Nextmedia sold 98.7 to Sunrise and then was put into trust by Carolina Broadcasting, owned by
"NC Spin" host Tom Campbell, as for what will happen once Jim Goodmon gets it back, stay tuned..

This story is surely one to watch.

A few points if I may :)

1. Sea-Comm just picked up Surf 98.3 that being said They Tweaked 103.7 The Bone's format last year. The Bone has the widest most open playlist in the market next to The Penguin.

2. When Sea-Comm takes over WSFM could we see a new improved 98.3 as Sea-Comm loves to use broad playlists?

3. 106.7 has a limited signal but the fans are LOYAL; How do you think listeners are going to react when they flip to 106.7 and hear religious programming?

4. I know it had been brought up that 99.9 104.5 or 107.5 could move to 98.7. I don't see either 99.9 or 107.5 taking up the 98.7 frequency as both stations recently adjusted their power. I see Sunny 104.5 moving from the weak signal they are on now to the 100kw giant which according to radio-locator can be reached as far south as North Myrtle Beach and as far North as Raleigh.

5. Lets say Sunny does make the move stated above for discussion sake; what format would be best for little old 104.5

6. Assuming 98.7 gets a whole new format, what would be the best fit for the giant signal?

7. When are all these moves going to be complete? I am not complaining I am just pointing out the fact that we cannot go one year without a format change or tweak in this market.

Moving Sunny to 98.7 would not be the brighest idea... they used to have the same format as "Lite 98.7" and it went nowhere.

I think WAZO("Z-107.5")should move to 98.7, and WILT(or whatever it may become) should go to 107.5, which
is now 75,000 watts, as for 104.5, since ESPN airs on WMFD 630, they should consider putting "Fox Sports" on
this frequency, with the addition of UNCW Basketball next month, it would be a great fit.

You could very well have been hearing Sunny. I don't know if it's the weather or the location of my radio; but Monday night here in Wilmington I could not get Surf on 98.3 but on the same frequency I picked up Sunny 104.5 While I'm on the subject maybe someone could help me out. About three years ago I was sitting on my back porch; I had my radio tuned to AM630 expecting to hear WMFD and I get WCBS 880 out of New York as clear as a bell with no fading in and out on 630. I am familiar with DXing but in both cases the frequencies did not even match and I have never picked up a distant AM during the day at 12:40pm only FM signals. have come booming in from hundreds of miles away during the day.

I used to listen to a country station at 98.3 and going down a long hill, about 40 miles due east of Charlotte, I could sometimes hear Surf. More often I heard a gospel station in Columbia.

FCC Has Acted

According to the FCC Daily Digest I get in my inbox, the FCC granted the following "Station Applications for Assignment of License" - action taken on Nov 10:

WMYT (1180 AM) from Carolina Christian Radio to Sea-Comm

WUIN (106.7 FM) from Sea-Comm to Carolina Christian Radio

WLGD (98.7 FM) from Carolina Broadcasting and Publishing (as Trustee) to Sunrise Broadcasting

WSFM (98.3 FM) from Sunrise Broadcasting to Sea-Comm

Now that these actions have been taken, any speculation on format changes, especially in relation to 98.7,
104.5 and 107.5?

Jammin' 99.9 was brought back; Surf is returning to Sea-Comm. I wonder... With The Hawk and The Bone's ratings in the toilet both are rock stations. Could we see the return of Kool 98.7? this time with a wide playlist from the late 50s to the mid 80s less disco than Jammin' and artist that art rarely heard a la The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Chicago, among many others with live air telent? I am not thinking "oldies" I am thinking classic hits but not the "rock" you will find on the Hawk or the Bone I am thinking classic top 40 the likes of WCBS FM in New York City or KIX 102.9 in Raleigh, what are your thoughts?

Bringing back "Kool 98.7" would not be a bad idea, but Sunrise Broadcasting wants to do everything they can
to un-seat WGNI as the dominant AC station in the Wilmington market, yes, a AC format was tried several
years ago when the original WILT was at 98.7 and was using the "lite" monikor, but things are different this
time, oldies a.k.a. "classic hits" doesn't work well in some places, and with the audience for this getting older
each year, you have to keep at fresh sound instead of playing the same songs from the past over and over, if
they programmed themselves similar to say, WCBS-FM in New York, it might work, but i still believe that by
the start of 2011, three stations will poise themselves to switch frequencies, WILT, WMFD, and WAZO, and
don't be surprised to see 630 and 1180 being sold, it would be nice for 630 go to a "standards" format, this
would fit them, and as for 1180, it may go "secular" spanish this time if Sea-Comm chooses to put it up for
sale.

In PPM markets classic hits/oldies does extremely well. CH/Oldies stations are springing up almost as fast as they were whacked back 2003-05.

Programming a station for Wilmington following the WCBS model would be a bad idea. One, WCBS has a TSA pop of over 19 million. Quite diverse. Doo wop is still played albeit on specialty shows/weekends. In Wilmington a classic hits station playing doo wop would not go over well. A CH in Wilmington would be a pop oriented station with R&B and beach music worked in.

This is from earlier today on www.****************

Alternative WSFM-FM (Surf 98.3)/Wilmington, NC, morning personality Mud in the Morning (aka Mike Kennedy) exits after ten years of service. During his decade at WSFM, he occupied both PD and MD posts.

Mudd leaving + The fact that WSFM was just sold to Sea-Comm...Coicedince I think not.

When 98.3 moves over to Cinema Drive; do you think the current format will stay exactly the same as it is now?
