Stations I'd like to see come back

My favorite Top 40 AM's when I was a teenager in Bartlesville OK (1974-80).

KAKC AM and when they simulcast at night with their FM in the mid 70's Tulsa OK
KELi "Kelly" Tulsa OK (74-82) and as "14K-92K" (83-4)
WHB Kansas City 70's and even Oldies in the 80's
KXVQ Pawhuska OK - small town Top 40 in 77-80.. I later worked there in the early 80's when it was "Q County"

Others

KLIF 1190 Dallas (1960's era)

KAAY Little Rock (70's)

KSTP Minneapolis (Top 40 1970's)

WLS Chicago (1970's - though having those classic calls back on the FM is a good thing)

KTUX "Fun Radio Tux-99" CHR - Shreveport (1988-92) a w-i-d-e CHR that would play Stevie Ray Vaughn and New Kids on the Block back to back. The last good CHR I remember.

KHYI "Y-95" or "Power 95" - Dallas - a really good CHR for its time.

KOFM Oklahoma City Late 1970's and when they returned to CHR in 1984-6.

KZUE "Kay-Zoo" Oklahoma City Late 1970's.. later they became KJ-103, but never as good.

KKRD Wichita KS (mid 1980's) I lived there in 1986-8 and they ruled that market for most of the 80's and early 90's. Had a veteran DJ staff and a tight sounding station for years. Until Cheap Channel ownership made it all fall apart.

KEYN-AM/FM Wichita KS - especially around 1975-77. Most of their best jocks in the 70's later worked for KKRD and returned when they went oldies.

KLEO Wichita KS (1970's) I never heard this station except for a few airchecks that a friend collected but they rocked.

KMCK "K-105" Siloam Springs, Arkansas back in the 80's. Huge Signal, and back in 1981 they were the only CHR station I could pick up regularly in NE Oklahoma.

KPXI "X-100" Mt Pleasant TX (CHR/Alternative - late 80's)

Aha! Those were some great times, although the segue from the Bill Drake automated programming to the simulcast was not always smooth. Plus, I believe that the AM studios were used for the FM source, and the quality initially was not good on FM. It got better over time, but I think that S. Carl Mark probably kicked himself (or maybe not) for not pushing the AM format to FM and allowing KRAV to capture that market in the mid to late 1970s.

Though I hated it, Beautiful music format was one of the hot formats on FM then.. and I guess Mark wanted a piece of the action.

I remember some nights around 6pm KAKC-FM would play "The Good Bad & The Ugly" as pad music so they could segue smoothly into the AM simulcast, other nights they'd just segue to whatever was playing on the AM. The simulcast would last til 10, other times it'd go till midnight. I just wish I had made better recordings then.

I had a cheap Panasonic 8-track recording deck at the time and only recorded the songs and never the jock. I tried "remastering" those old trackers about 14 years ago onto cassettes, they were very hissy and KAKC-FM's processing wasn't great, you could clearly hear the turntable "bumps" when the DJ moved around the console and commercials were all mono.

I wish the FCC never had those stupid 40% simulcast rules back then, and maybe KAKC would have gone a total AM/FM simulcast, which looking in hindsight would have saved them from being buried from "Superfox 103" and KELi in 1977.

I'll agree that bringing back KZEW would be great.

And I really liked "FM 102." That was KFWD 102.1 before it became Q102. Maybe it's just because I found it when I was just discovering FM and it was so different from the Top 40 stations I had always listened to.

I would like to see the following stations come back

KTJM 98.5 Houstons Jammin Hits Houston, Texas
KSAQ 96.1 Q96FM killer new music (they had cruz news in the morning) San Antonio, Texas
KSJL (on 760AM that is) when they were Urban AC/Urban "Mix Show" San Antonio, Texas instead of the ticket they should have flipped 96rock back to q96 on the fm dial and left KSJL 76 the Touch alone.
KHYS Kiss 98.5 (the dance format) Houston, Texas
KSMG Majic 105 the oldies format (they played the album version of the oldies) San Antonio, Texas
KMMX K-Mix 106 San Antonio, Texas
KFAN 101.1 San Antonio, Texas
KSJL 76-Z-rock
KTSA 55 Top 40 San Antonio, Texas
KISS 99.5 Oldies (they only played the 45 version of the oldies)
KRBE Club 104 Houston, Texas (1991) they did some cool edits I don't know how they remove the sound effects on their songs.
What was the difference between KTSA and KTFM back before KTSA was talk? I remember waking up to KTSA when I only had an AM clock radio.

I remember Power 93 sounded like what Magic 105 is today even before they were Star 93. What was the difference between Power 93 and Q96 because I would only listen to 96.1, 101.1, 101.9, 102.7 (not too much they would never play the complete version of the song) 104.5, 105.3, and 106.7

I believe KTFM was automated at the time with one of the Drake-Chenault formats, Hit Parade or Solid Gold Rock & Roll.

A few more that I enjoyed in years past and would like to see come back (but know they never will) could be...

KENR - Houston (60's-70's era)
KTLW - Texas City (60's-70's era)
KULF - Houston (Late 70's)
KILE - Galveston(60's-70's era)
KGOL - Lake Jackson(mid to late 70's)

WOW, hold the phones ladies and gentlemen. We have a true legend in the house. The long time Midday host on KVIL, Mr. Ken Barnett.

What are you doing these days, Ken? Are you still in the DFW area?

If I could have one station back, it would be KVIL, when Ron was doing mornings, you were in Middays, Larry Dixon was in afternoon drive, Valier Smith was doing KVIL Love Songs, and Mary Rose was doing overnights. Talk about great radio.

"It's a shame what's happened to KVIL!" ;)

Welcome to the boards, and don't be a stranger.
