stations in danger of flipping/stations that improved

OK, maybe I'm wrong, but it still doesn't appeal to me. I might be able to tolerate B more if they would ditch their ancient morning show and get some fresher talent.

Hot 98.1's numbers don't surprise me. Nothing about them stands out at all. Those are the worst numbers I have ever seen for them - they had been doing exceptionally well (6 shares, beating B)

That "ancient" morning show happens to do quite well in the ratings game and makes the station a lot of money. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What's wrong with CHRs giving high rotations to songs that aren't big yet on the CHR/Pop or Billboard Hot 100 chart? I think it's great when CHRs take chances on new records and find success with them. Whether it's a song the PD is going with his gut on b/c he/she knows what works at the station, or b/c it's a local or regional act that's generating buzz, or just a good balance record, there's a lot of reasons some records receive high rotations prior to most stations.

For example, 107.5 The River Nashville was early on Adele's "Rollin In The Deep", and the song was in High rotation long before most CHR/Pop stations added it. And hey, guess what WRVW is also playing The Band Perry's "If I Die Young" with about 90 spins, and 95.1 WAPE Jacksonville already has it with about 50 spins.
104.7 Kiss FM Phoenix has "Right There" by Nicole Scherzinger in its Top 10,
The number 1 song on 101.1 WIXX Green Bay is "Paris (Ooh La La)" by Grace Potter, and they have Locksley's "The Whip" in their Top 10 as well. Oh yeah, they too have The Band Perry in their Top 10.
Channel 95-5 Detroit has "I'm In Love" by Christian TV in their Top 10.
Kiss 106.1 Seattle has Downtown Fiction "I Just Wanna Run" in their Top 10. They're also the only CHR playing Pink's "Heartbreak Down"
Radio Now 100.9 Indianapolis has Mike Posner at number this week with "Bow Chicka Wow Wow"
92 Pro in Providence has Runner Runner Top 10 with "I Can't Wait (Be My Wife)"
107.5 KZL Greensboro has Jason Aldean/Kelly Clarkson "Don't You Wanna Stay" in the Top 10, and has increased spins for "Closer To The Edge" by Thirty Seconds To Mars, even though the song's moving down nationally.
107.5 The Q in Memphis has Santana's "Photograph" in its Top 10

There are plenty of successful CHRs that still spin Recurrents in high rotation.
106.1 Kiss FM Dallas put Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" back inside their Top 20.
Kiss 108 Boston still has Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me" and Ke$ha's "We R Who We Are" in its Top 20.
In fact, "Hold It Against Me" is Top 10 at 93.3 FLZ Tampa. FLZ also has "Club Can't Handle Me" by Flo Rida in the Top 20, and Edward Maya.
101.3 KDWB Minneapolis still has Avril Lavigne's "What The Hell" in its Top 20.
In fact, Z-100 Portland still has Avril in its Top 10, and Bruno Mars "Grenade" in its Top 20.
You brought up Kiss 95.1 Charlotte, which still has "Waiting For The End" by Linkin Park in its Top 10, and Pitbull's "Hey Baby". Amongst its Top 20 you can find Chrstina Perri's "Jar of Hearts" and Avril's "What The Hell".
G-105 Raleigh also has Avril in its Top 10, and My Chemical Romance is now Top 5 with "Sing" on WDCG even though it's moving down the CHR/Pop chart. Neon Trees "Animal" is Top 20 there.
96.5 Kiss FM Cleveland has Rhianna's "Only Girl" in its Top 20.
In your region stations such as Star 102.1 Knoxville, Star 104.3 Asheville, and 104.7 WNOK Columbia give high rotations to plenty of Recurrents.

So I'll base my conslusions on all of the information I've posted above, and couple that with the current playlist I see for B-93.7, as well as the fact that B-93.7 posted a 6.1 share, which is its highest share in some time (while Rhythmic Hot 98.1 is down to a 3.9, which may be its all-time low).
Conclusion: I really don't think B-93.7 is a hot mess, quite the opposite - its seems like a pretty focused and well-programmed CHR/Pop station.

EXCELLENT post CHRles! I hate it when people just say things without either stating that it's only their opinion or without backing up what they've said with facts. You didnt just point at 2 or 3 or even 10 examples, you sat and researched and reported many many examples. Just wanted to say I appreciate posts like that a lot. excellent job, thanks!

Just goes to show how limited this market is when it comes to morning radio choices, I guess. I have nothing against Hawk/Tom, but it just sounds so outdated and slow paced.

It's fine if they're not your cup of tea. To be fair though, Hawk & Tom both worked at Tampa's 93.3 FLZ back in its early Power 93 days (Tom also worked at Y-107 Nashville prior to that) so these guys do have talent.

I now add I93/KLIF-FM in Dallas to the list of stations in danger of flipping. Int the May book, they were 2.3 6+ and 21st in the market, and on a downward trend.

I94/WRWM in Indy continues its downward trend, also on a downward trend. In the May book, they were 1.6 6+ and 17th in the market.

I think of the larger market CHR's, these two are the biggest candidates for a flip. The 93.9 frequency in Indy seems cursed!

I noticed that KBKS-FM Seattle has gone down in the ratings. that's suprising! they were horrible a while ago then did so well what happened?! Any other stations in danger of flipping? any stations improving?

While I can appreciate that they have a unique playlist maybe they play too many songs that aren't hits?

Yeah I don't understand what's going on with KBKS's PD - they keep playing pop-punk tracks that no one else plays, which is great except their ratings keep going down - you'd think they'd notice a trend here...

KBKS is no longer owned by cbs radio anymore. They are owned by Clear Channel which owns their sister rythymic CHR KUBE. So that can explain the punk pop playlist. They want to keep KUBE at the top.

Same situation in Boston though (Clear Channel owns CHR/Pop Kiss 108 and Rhythmic WJMN), but it's kept Kiss 108 slightly on the Rhythmic side for the last ten years or so

Also, it's one thing to lean Alternative, but KBKS skips big Alternative-leaning tracks on the CHR chart in favor of pop-punk tracks that literally no one else is playing...

A station that has improved is 92.7 rev fm in San Francisco, they went from a 0.9 to a 1.2, I think that is the highest rating that 92.7 has ever got

I don't understand why that station is even there - someone told me it's based in the city and just doesn't reach very far out

Keep in mind the Bay area radio market is a very tricky market. A third of it is made up of San Jose (which is also its own seperate market), which is a big part of the reason why you don't see a lot of San Francisco stations post over a 3 share in the ratings.
Additionally, San Francisco is a very wealthy city, as are nearby Alameda (home to Berkley), and Marin counties.
So if you've got a 3000 watt signal that reaches those areas you could be looking at some pretty good revenues.
Now we know CHR radio is already covered in the Bay area. It's amazing to see 99.7 Now post high shares and cume. Keep in mind though that Now is a very Dance/Rhythmic leaning CHR, the type of sound that has always worked in this market. Additionally, Rhythmic Wild 94.9 has become much more Pop leaning in the past couple of years that it's almost hard to distinguish Now from Wild.
92.7 Rev FM has also moved more towards this sound, but still embraces titles from the likes of Taylor Swift and Neon Trees.
If Rev FM posted a 1.2 share in the general San Francisco-San Jose ratings, chances are it's acheiving a 3-4 share in San Francisco proper, and its surrounding counties. The fact that a pure CHR/Pop station is now able to produce such numbers in this town is an accomplishment in and of itself!
