Stations In The Mix Over The Holidays....

Christmas is usually the most boring day of the year for radio. It's even worse when it falls on a Saturday because Saturday's are normally the most interesting day of the week for mix shows. With Christmas falling on a Saturday, the two cancel each other out. New Years is great, but since it already falls on a weekend, I don't see it as anything special for the next two or three years because no one will be "forced" to do more than just a weekend mix, which is normally already done on a regular weekend schedule. I like when New Years is on a Thursday, Friday, Monday, or Tuesday because that means stations will most likely have to do a four day weekend. Wednesday's are the worst day for a holiday, since most people will "cheat" and just mix for that one day.

I still do remember the all of December holiday mix weekend on Power 106 back in 96. Many other L.A. stations were partying it up as well, in english and spanish.

It seems like holiday mix weekends are hard to find now. I remember here in Texas, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio would all do their thing during a holiday. Now, maybe San Antonio is the only city in Texas that's doing anything at all.

Reasoning, Christmas suppose to be the holiday to "respect" and honor rather than party on.

It's a catch 22 for a most urban stations the ones that gender-neutral in target demos will likely not mix rather play holiday music. Also 90% of the on-air staff (including most regular part-timers) are off for the holiday. However, the ones that targets males usually will mix (but most of it isn't live since mixers might want to be off as well). On rhythmic stations, it all depends on local management because I've seen some do like their urban counterparts and yield mixing for the holiday as well.

Raydiodude, the mixshow schedule looks great! With Christmas being on a Saturday im sure most stations will do the usual Friday/Saturday mixshow schedules. BTW, your New years Eve nonstop mixes reminds me of how HOT 107.9 would do Megamixes on holidays back in the day.

BLAZIN 92.3 Macon, GA will jumpoff in the mix on Christmas Eve as well.

Thats what im talking bout! People always hate on HOT 97, but they still got dat swagg ;D

Finally Phoenix is getting active. We've gone from 0 to 3 stations all mixing so far...
Haven't checked out the classic hip hop, rhythmic oldies, or any of the latin rhythm stations yet, though..

B96 is already on FIRE! Dan Morrell is airing a pretty dancy "Best of 2010" mix! :)

Shawty, I checked out Hot 97 last night. They actually wasn't mixing. They were just playing music. No blending.

Like I said before, here in the DFW, 97.9 started mixing at 5pm, believe it or not, KRNB kicked off a commercial-free New Years Eve mix at 8pm, and Steve Nice is in rare form on K104. I will be posting airchecks of these mixes in the Aircheck group on Facebook for download so check them out.
