Stations picked up in Wolcott, CT Friday Night

Friday Night I was picking up stations in Wolcott, CT on my car radio I don't normally get.

103.5 KTU from NYC and K-104.7 from Poughkeepsie, NY were both crystal clear and were like locals.

News 101.9 FM WEMP from NYC and 107.5 WBLS also from NYC were listenable, but fuzzy.

Soft Rock 106.5 from Ledyard, CT was coming in like a local as was 97.7 WCTY from Norwich, CT.

I also got a fuzzy, but listenable signal from 106.7 FM. Given that I was getting 3 other NYC stations I will assume that it was LITE-FM and not Boston's 106.7

Marc, depending on which part of Wolcott you were in, it isn't that unusual to pull in the stations you listed. Back when I lived in the area (pre-IBOC, of course), New York FMs could be picked up as soon as you get to Cedar Lake in Bristol and held in pretty well about 2/3 of the way through Wolcott - until the terrain lowers as you approach the Waterbury city line. WSPK was dependable throughout most of Wolcott. The terrain is relatively high (800' to 1040') and faces south and west making it quite favorable for reception of New York area signals.

I once dated a gal who lived in a neighborhood to the east of Cedar Lake at the south edge of Bristol. You could get 97.1 and 103.5 from NY at her house AND 103.7 from RI as well (back then it was RI 104). WRKI was local grade there, many Long Islanders (like WBLI) came in surprisingly well too. Great listening spot, though not nearly worth the cost! ;)

Another good dxing spot in that area is Chippens Hill in Bristol. On its east edge (where the view is), you can get eastern LI, Providence, Cape Cod and even Boston most of the time - drive 1/4 mile west and you get New York City, the Hudson Valley and western Long Island. WRKI is like a local there too.

Have either of you been to New Haven and the top of East Rock for a little DX?

I was just in New Haven, and it never occured to me to trek up East Rock with my favorite FM receiver. Next time...if it's not too cold.

Since I'm "sort of" an employee at Illusions Dance Club in Wolcott I've fooled around with my car radio several times before and never got those stations before. Maybe because this time it was at night?

Also today in Southington (the plaza where Bob's Furniture is - used to be Ames) KTU was crystal clear. News 101.9 and 98.7 KISS-FM were fuzzy but somewhat listenable, and I heard LaMega 97.9 fighting with KIX from Springfield. And Bristol's, 98.1 WX4ESPN was very weak, when it's normally crystal clear in that area.
