Stations reacting to Now FM

Looks Z100 isn't reacting very much to Now FM.

I think you're extremely wrong with this statement. Listen carefully to Z-100. They have cut their playlist down considerably and have put songs into hyper-rotation like 92.3.

Z-100 has also dropped most of their older songs. Looks like Z-100 is chasing 92.3 which is mistake #1. I'm sure this will be the first in many mistakes Z-100 makes in the next few months. That station has become fat and lazy compared to what they used to be. A Clear Channel insider told me that the elders running Z-100 literally have no experience in street battles with other radio stations. Happens when you have been sitting on the hill fighting nobody! My bet - the young and hungry guys win this radio war.

Yep I agree, Hot 97 is actually trying to BECOME NOW 92.3. Very odd. But Now is doing it better than Hot 97, which is now completely unlistenable to those that love Hip Hop. So when I have the urge to listen to urban, I know regrettably have to flip the "power switch" yet again to power 105, although I really just hang on to 97.1 HD2 Throwbacks, or Fuerza 105.1 HD2 (Which has a pretty good mix)

Hot 97 will probably suffer, because they are way too rhythmic for their original listeners, but NOW with the publicicty will get the rhythmic listeners. The winners here? Probably Power 105.1... Big Time and also PLJ 95.5, and also NOw 92.3 (especially compared to KROCK), RXP will have a very small gain as well. Z100 will probably lose, how much, yet to be seen, but they will by no means stay the same in the ratings. Whether or not they like it, its another Power 105 meets Hot 97 where the top station gets its ratings split in two. Now92 could do better, but i think theyve still got z100 beat. Which is probably why Z100 is reacting already.

I dont think Hot 97 is reacting to NOW but is reacting to the musical climate. Hip Hop has gone Pop... what good "hip hop "is there these days? The definition of what hip hop was is different now... Hip Hop has gone more Pop sounding and Hot 97 is reflecting that... My question is - what took them so long?

Wow. How did Jamie Foxx find the time to make so many songs? I guess as long as it keeps him busy enough to not say incendiary things about Hannah Montana, it's OK...

Definitely agree.

Things have certainly changed from as recent as 3 years ago. Hip-hop has been taking a sales dive while the rhythmic aspect of music has grown, to the point that the sound has branched out into dance remixes (by known remixers/producers that make the track their "own")....which is where the crossover is.

I knew Z was going to be the main target, but Hot 97 is the one really reacting to this.

Jay, beats me what took Hot so long, but better late than never, right? :)

Forgive me guys, I dont live in NYC and HOT doesnt stream, but it really still looks pretty Urban to me aside from Lady GAGA.. Its certainly not as Rhythmic as Power 106 in LA and B-96 Chicago,, and KZON and KKFR in Phoenix... Hot to my knowledge still plays no POP or Dance music,,, which im not saying they should right now, since you have Pulse and NOW for that music,, but even the Lady GAGA is the Hip Hop remix... Hot doesnt even play any Dance Mix shows do they??????

Do this put on NOW 92.3 then wait until the song is over, you will hear it on Z100 ....
Ive done this a handful of times and they are copying the same exact songs, its only good if you missed a song .
Otherwise its about as cookie cutter as it gets,no wonder people are using ipods more!
With this new PAY AS YOU PLAY LAW ,radio will have but another nail in its coffin.
Less artists, more repetition and more no name artists.I hope the NAB is against this law!

I did take a look at this site and to be honest, I really don't know what to make except that when the smoke clears from all sides, the listener loses.

Z-100 Mix is still Top 40 and not moving rhythmic From what I see. The Rotation? Yes that did tighten. I think most stations against new competition will tighten their playlist.

Sounds like which came first, hip hop's "demise" or the plummeting of hip hop "sales" , chicken or the egg.

And then again, All the non-commercial stations here in New York still manage to play East Coast New York Hip Hop, why the disparity? Why did Hip hop ONLY disappear on commercial radio. Not only the regular shows, but check out WBAI's hip hop takeover when it hppens a few times a year, not at all rhythmic. Ive even heard Funmaster Flex raving about execs killing real hip hop East Coast music, on Hot 97. Ive heard DJs with their rants on Hot 97 complaining on air about despising the new rhythmic and southern mix on several shifts. Ive herd the word "pi$$ed" on the air about the situation. All I hear on non com urban shows are brand new non rhythmic hip hop music. And even on the non-comms, the DJs have even more leeway to explain just how they fight this staged demise of hip hop. We have a lot of non comm stations here, alot, and all the DJS seem to have resentment of the rhythmic trend. Ive yet to hear otherwise on the air. I tend to believe radio execs that would never DARE set foot in the "hood" killed hi hop to make it more rhythmic, and since everyone else tunes into the commercial stations, the change followed. TV tells us the Jonas brothers are cool, so 95% buy their music like lemmings. TV and Radio tell us that Kucinich and Ron Paul can't win, so we all collectively vote the lesser evil every single time. Some one decided to kill hip hop, so people stopped listening and buying. I certainly dont believe radio listens to the peoples taste, or else nearly EVERY station would have the ipod format ;)

I know, its all about what sells, but I have a hard time understand how East Coast New York Hip hop doesnt atleast sell in New York? Or else how would it be East Coast NEw York Hip Hop?

I like Now 92.3, but not if my urban stations are gonna become rhythmic clones. I want radio diversity. Now 92.3 filled a hole in the market, doesnt mean everyone has to jump in and fill the same hole. *sigh (frustrated)

you didn't believe that hip hop,as it was, was going to last forever ,did you? It'll always be around, like heavy metal and disco, but there's nothing new under the sun concerning pure form hip hop, a black man is now president, the world has moved on..
to LADY GAGA!!!!

The ratings just came out with WXRK taking a beating for the month of March. I doubt the significant drop can be blamed on the first eleven days of March with the old format. We should know more when April ratings come out.

Does not look like WHTZ or any other stations have anything to worry about for now.

I honestly don't think HOT has reacted to NOW. Their playlist is as it was prior to NOW's launch. They've always thrown in some rhythmic in the mix. They are a rhythmic CHR.
They still play lot's of hip, hop.

Z100 on the other hand seems to have moved in a more rhythmic direction but at the end of the day they have stayed the course.

It is way to early to judge how NOW will affect other CHR's as NOW only came into play 3 weeks into this months PPM but I would assume they've built some cume.

On a side note however, NOW seems primarily programmed for the suburbs. Between Lisa Paige and Chunky with their idiotic question of the day ploy geared towards suburban teenage girls, I doubt NOW will do serious damage to the ever powerful Z100.
